From the Corner of the Library

"Topanga Canyon is home to two couples on a collision course. Los Angeles liberals Delaney and Kyra Mossbacker lead an ordered sushi-and-recycling existence in a newly gated hilltop community: he is a sensitive nature writer, she an obsessive realtor. Mexican illegals Candido and América Rincon desperately cling to their vision of the American Dream as they fight off starvation in a makeshift camp deep in the ravine.

From the moment a freak accident brings Candido and Delany into intimate contact, these four and their opposing worlds gradually intersect in what becomes a tragicomedy of error and misunderstanding."

One Book, One Iowa Falls is back again, this year featuring "The Tortilla Curtain," by T.C. Boyle. What began as a program offered strictly through the Iowa Falls Library, has now grown to incorporate the students and faculty of the Ellsworth Community College, as well as the patrons and faculty of the Alden Public Library. Each year, one fiction or non-fiction title is selected and then read by a large group of people. Events, including book discussions, film viewings and community panel discussions, give these readers an opportunity to discuss what they have read. The end result becomes a community-wide activity that brings together the patrons of two libraries and the student and faculty of ECC.

The 2009 One Book schedule of events is set to begin on Thursday, October 1, at The Coffee Attic at 5:30pm, when poetry themes from the book will be discussed. The schedule continues through the rest of the month, with an informational film about immigration on October 8, at the Dale Howard Family Activity Center, Room 103 at 6:30pm; a discussion of topics and themes in the book on October 15, at the Dale Howard Family Activity Center, Room 103, at 6:30pm; a book discussion and film viewing on October 22 at the Barlow Library at 6:30pm; and culminating with an immigration and community panel discussion on October 29 at at the Dale Howard Family Activity Center, Room 103, at 6:30pm.

Copies of the book are currently available at the Barlow Library, as well as the Alden Public Library. In order to get the best experience from the book discussions, interested parties should read the book prior to the events in order to better discuss the content.
