Lily and Salma are best friends. They like to do the same things and always have lunch together. Lily eats peanut butter and Salma eats hummus — but what’s that among friends? It turns out a lot. Before they knew it, a scramble for food broke out. Can Lily and Salma put their differences aside? Or will there be a sandwich between them?

Like many of my book companions, this book focuses heavily on comprehension and vocabulary. These 12 cards will help you discuss the story.
When working on story elements, make sure to use this rotation.
To help with the sequencing I created this sequence sandwich activity. Students will arrange the six events in the story in the order in which they occurred. These cards can then be inserted into the sandwich and pinned to create a sequenced sandwich.
As the book progresses, students will be confronted with new or unfamiliar terms. I chose 12 words to focus on this story. There is also a suitable definition for each vocabulary card. They can be used in a pocket chart display or students can play a memory game for extra practice.
I’ve also added these graphic organizers and a vocabulary matching page to use with the story.
Sandwich Swap Craft
To stay on the sandwich theme, I created a handmade sandwich. Students can respond to the text in different ways on each sandwich mount. I’ve included some writing ideas for your students, but you can always choose your own.
Once the writing is complete, all the pages can be clipped together into a booklet.
You can find all of these activities in my companion book forsandwich swap. If you enjoyed these resources, be sure to check out the rest of meactivity book.
