About the book

Written by:Queen Rania Al Abdullah with Kelly DiPucchio
Illustrated by:Tricia Tusa

Lily and Salma are best friends. They like to do the same things and always have lunch together. Lily eats peanut butter and Salma eats hummus — but what’s that among friends? It turns out a lot. Before they knew it, a scramble for food broke out. Can Lily and Salma put their differences aside? Or will there be a sandwich between them?

If your students are letting their differences make new friends, this is a must-have for your class!

The Sandwich Swap is a story about friendship, acceptance, and keeping an open mind. In this story, two girls learn that their friendship is much stronger than their differences.

Like many of my book companions, this book focuses heavily on comprehension and vocabulary. These 12 cards will help you discuss the story.

These 12 cards will help guide your discussion while reading The Sandwich Swap.

When working on story elements, make sure to use this rotation.

After reading The Sandwich Swap, students can review story elements with this sandwich-themed spinner.

To help with the sequencing I created this sequence sandwich activity. Students will arrange the six events in the story in the order in which they occurred. These cards can then be inserted into the sandwich and pinned to create a sequenced sandwich.

After reading The Sandwich Swap, students can complete this sequencing activity. Students will put six events from the story into order and place them inside this Sequence Sandwich.

As the book progresses, students will be confronted with new or unfamiliar terms. I chose 12 words to focus on this story. There is also a suitable definition for each vocabulary card. They can be used in a pocket chart display or students can play a memory game for extra practice.

I have included 12 vocabulary cards and definitions to use with The Sandwich Swap. These can be put on display while reading, or used in a matching game.

I’ve also added these graphic organizers and a vocabulary matching page to use with the story.

There are several graphic organizers included to summarize or retell The Sandwich Swap. Students can also put their vocabulary knowledge to work with this matching activity.

Sandwich Swap Craft

To stay on the sandwich theme, I created a handmade sandwich. Students can respond to the text in different ways on each sandwich mount. I’ve included some writing ideas for your students, but you can always choose your own.

After reading The Sandwich Swap, students can create this sandwich craft booklet. I have included several ideas for writing prompts, but you can also choose your own.

Once the writing is complete, all the pages can be clipped together into a booklet.

After reading The Sandwich Swap, students can create this sandwich craft booklet. I have included several ideas for writing prompts, but you can also choose your own.

You can find all of these activities in my companion book forsandwich swap. If you enjoyed these resources, be sure to check out the rest of meactivity book.
