1. The Dutch capital of Copenhagen has a large concentration of Danes

The people of Denmark are called Danes. Things that come from Denmark are called Danish. Dutch has nothing to do with Denmark. And please don’t use Danish as a noun. It’s an adjective. “Danish” doesn’t exist. Even if they taste great.

2. Where did the Vikings come from?

We are often asked this question on our travels. But the Vikings did not come from anywhere, nor did they disappear to any other place. They are just people living here in Scandinavia. They began attacking the rest of Europe in the late 7th century AD. After that they converted to Christianity and became more peaceful and stable. The majority of people in Denmark, Norway, Sweden and Iceland are descendants of these Vikings.

And do they have horns on their helmets? no This is a legend.

3. Why Denmark is not part of EuropeUnion?

Map of European UnionEuropean Union map

We are. We just don’t use the euro.

Just as Sweden and the UK are members of the EU (currently!) that are not part of the euro.

The Danish government has wanted to join the euro for decades. But the Danish constitution does not allow such a decision without a referendum, and the people voted no twice. Fortunately, the Danish Krone is one of the most stable and reliable currencies in the world and interest rates are very low.

Bicycles in CopenhagenCyclists in Copenhagen

4. Why so many bikes?

It never ceases to amaze foreigners with the number of bicycles in Copenhagen. Why is a good question.

Local politicians often try to give credit when they say people use bikes because they built bike lanes everywhere. But even before there were bike lanes, the city was full of bikes. (Just look upThis video from the 1930s). What is certain is that Copenhagen is relatively flat, the temperature is good for exercise and cycling has become the social norm.

5. The Queen has no say, right?

Yes…yes and no. The monarch actually has a lot of power under our constitution. It decides who the members of the government are. She decides when elections are held and the law does not come into force until she signs it. In fact, she always does what Parliament wants. But if one day she refuses to sign a law, we really don’t know what to do because there is no constitutional way to force her to do so. It will cause a major headache for the Danish political system.

6. What is the difference between Scandinavian and Nordic?

That’s pretty easy.

Scandinavia is Denmark, Norway and Sweden.

The Nordic countries are Scandinavia, Finland and Iceland.

7. Is tipping expected in Denmark?

Tip boxdrinking bottle

No, but it’s not uncommon. Advice for a better than expected service. Bartenders and tax collectors don’t expect tips. But if you’re happy with the service at a restaurant, it’s normal to tip 10%. But only if you are satisfied with the service.

8. Is it legal to buy marijuana?

no Buying, selling and possession of drugs is illegal. As we said in number 1, we are not Dutch.

German ReichstagGerman Reichstag

9. Is it true that Danish is a branch of German?

Oh boy. Be careful. It’s not good if you think we’re some Germans.

Danish IS is a branch of the German language tree. But also English, Dutch and German and other Scandinavian languages. Danish is most closely related to Norwegian and Swedish, although to foreigners it sounds more like German and Dutch.

10. Are there famous Danes?

Naturally. Just to name a few:

  • Writers Hans Christian Andersen and Soeren Kierkegaard
  • Former NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen
  • Actors Viggo Mortensen and Connie Nielsen
  • The most stylish footballer in the world of all time (in our opinion), Michael Laudrup and goalkeepers Peter and Kasper Schmeichel
  • American football player Morten Andersen (second-highest NFL scoring of all time)
  • Tennis player Caroline Wozniacki
  • The best handball player in the world, Mikkel Hansen.

Last week, in Denmark, Malthe and Lærke Knudson had a baby girl they named Emma. That same day, the Robinsons—Dale and Beth—had a little baby in the United States. They called her Rachel.

Right now, they’re just two little babies keeping their parents awake at night. But Emma and Rachel were born in countries that have very different priorities, and that’s going to lead to pretty different futures.

It all boils down to this: Though Danes pay a lot more than Americans in taxes and government fees, they get a whole lot more back in social services: Almost three times as much!

As a result, Americans end up spending twice as much out-of-pocket for those social goods and services. Let’s see how that plays out over their two lives.
