Weems is immersed in the images, functioning as an archetype in a gendered space that is both a sanctuary and a battlefield – for moments of solitude and inner dialogue, as well as for gathering, collaborating and sharing experiences around family dynamics, friendships and struggle between the sexes.

There are 20 images and 14 text panels in the series. Weems produced her work at home on her kitchen table in 1990 with a single light source – a pendant light. At the time, she taught photography at the University of Hampshire in Amherst, a small college town in Massachusetts. She works odd hours, late nights and early mornings, whenever she finds time for her own practice. She is 38 years old.

“I really thought a lot about what it means to develop your own voice, so I made this part, the Kitchen Table Series,” Weems said.said Art21.”It started in an odd way in response to my own sense of what needed to happen, what needed to happen, and what just wasn’t going to be the voices of American women. Africa will be a more unified voice for women.”

THE PHOTOGRAPHS SAY THEIR VALUES. Adding text provides dimension and specificity, a call and response with visual narrative. At one point in the first half of the series, accompanied by images of Weems with a male partner, the text reads:

    She claims that what he calls authoritarian is a cloak tied to her because he can’t bear the thought of the inevitable shift in power relations. She assures him that the goal of their mission is not to control him, but out of necessity – freedom is the acknowledgment of necessity – to control themselves. She went on to tell him that given the daily pressure, she understood his doubts. But they were in a 50-50 thing. Equal. She will not defy the standards of tradition that denied her a position or voice at the time. She’s trying to be a good wife, a bride, a best friend, a living doll – and she’s working. How can he ask for more!! She was really tired of him using both sides of his mouth to talk about the nice woman he wanted. Cut fish or bait.

In 2016, Weems spokeT: Style Magazine of the New York Timesabout the series in the publication of a book dedicated to the content of the work. The artist said she had completed the photo project when she decided to present the text. Hillary Moss reported how the two factors come together:

    The story, a mixture of Bildungsroman and Beat-Poem, came to her unplanned about a month after filming wrapped. She spoke to a friend, then went on a long drive and read the words in one go. “You’re spinning around the idea, moving around the idea, and it’s not coming back home — and suddenly things are popping up,” she says. “For me, the most important thing an artist can do is break the rut. Work tells you what it needs, where to go; Even if you don’t understand why, you should still do it. In this respect, the text seems to come together with ease at a certain point.” And so “Kitchen Table” became part of the image and text. “I don’t necessarily need text with images, and I don’t necessarily need images with text, but they create an interesting dynamic and interplay,” says Weems.

Franklin Sirmans examined the operational aspects of Weems’ operation and examined the meaning of the text elements of the series in the exhibition catalogue.”Carrie Mae Weems: Three Decades of Photography and Video.”

With a poetic, succinct writing style reminiscent of Zora Neale Hurston’s native and oral narrative, the tragic history of the blues and the rhythms of jazz singing, The Table Book Series Weems’ cuisine is a sign of the times today. a formative part of the history of contemporary art of the late 1980s and early 1990s. ”

AT JACK SHAINMAN, the online exhibition presents a multimedia overview of the Kitchen Table Series. It was a real announcement. Photos and text panels from the series are on display along with quotes from interviews with Weems and articles about the work. Segments frame the series, highlighting critical reactions, the artist’s intentions and her influence on a younger artist (Xaviera Simmons). A Weems video about the series in 2018 belowNational Art Galleryin Washington D.C., included. The installations in the series are on display at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum is featured.

The library notes that the entire kitchen table series is in the collection ofCleveland Museum of Art(acquired in 2008) andDetroit Institute of the Arts(acquired in 2017) and individual works owned by at least eight other museums. The showroom also has a selection of photographs from the kitchen table set for sale.

The project is the subject of a separate episode”Carrie Mae Weems: The Kitchen Table Series”(a book Moss wrote for the Times), in which the body of the work was published in full for the first time, along with essays by curators Sarah Lewis and Adrienne Edwards.

“How do women define themselves? This was Weems’ guiding question in the earliest moments of the Kitchen Table series, as she reflected on her trove of 1980s photographs of women and what wasn’t there. We have images of women in the grip of beauty – a kind of power; Women in mother-centered states – another form of power. However, there are very few images that depict the journey to an inner sanctum,” Lewis wrote in the foreword.
