The Church in the Wildwood by Dr. PittsLittle Brown Church in the Vale Story

The first settlers arrived in the Bradford area in 1848 and with an ample supply of water and primeval timber the city thrived. In 1855, the first members of the Puritan Church began holding meetings. In 1856, Bradford had a population of 500 and was the first city in this part of Iowa.

A young music teacher named William Pitts traveled by carriage from Wisconsin to Iowa to visit his future wife. While waiting for the car change he walked down Cedar Street and saw the open field where the church now stood. As a romantic young man, he had the idea of an enchanting setting in which this place would form a church. Returning home, he wrote the poem “Church in the Wild Forest” and later turned it into music. He put it in the drawer and forgot about it.

Meanwhile, church members are tired of meeting in places like law offices, abandoned businesses, and the homes of parishioners. They started building a church. A family in the community gifted the property to them. When Rev. Nutting arrived, talk of construction became serious. Limestone was quarried and the foundation stone was laid in 1860. The Civil War slowed work, but as one family donated the tree and another helped saw the wood, the work never really stopped. By 1862 the building was fenced off and not a penny was spent. When it comes time to paint the building, the cheapest paint is Ohio Mineral Paint, which protects the wood but gives it an unsightly brown color. With the help of friends from the East, the building was completed in 1864 complete with bells.

Mr. Pitts is now married and living in Wisconsin. In 1862 the couple moved to Fredericksburg to be near their elderly parents and Mr. Pitts was hired to teach singing at Bradford Academy. Imagine his surprise when he saw a small brown church nestled in the trees exactly where he stood a few years ago. He went home and found this song and taught it to his class, who sang it at the dedication of the church. Pitts wrote a song for a church that didn’t exist. The church painted their little church brown without even hearing the song.

History is tough on Little Brown Church. The railroad ran through town and a corn mill moved to New Hampton on a larger river. Railroads and other industries moved to Nashua. The city, once the county seat, slowly disappeared. In 1888 the church building was closed, although the congregation continued to hold a weekly Sunday school at the school. Worship services are held regularly in the building. In the early 1900s a Little Brown Church Preservation Association was formed and in 1914 the services were organized again as they are now.

History took a different turn when the Weatherwax Quartet toured Canada and the United States from 1910 to 1921. Their theme song was “The Church in the Wildwood” and they were about little churches. After World War I, the highways were improved and cars brought many tourists to visit. When a school principal and a merchant’s daughter got married in a church, a new tradition of ringing the church bells began. It is a means of announcing the wedding and declaring blessings for the new couple.

In August 2014, 74,000 wedding ceremonies were held at the Church’s historic site. It remains, as it was when it was founded, a Congregational Church. In response to the blessing, the song continued to be sung in a small, brown-painted church in the wild woods.
