Multi-read content sophie and the rising sun

If you’ve seen Maggie Greenwald’s work before, you already have a good idea of the typical themes of her films. As much assong catcherandThe Ballad of Little Jo, piece timeSophie and the rising sunThere’s a clash of cultures, a story about fish that live in the water, and a romance that ties it all together. Although the structure itself seems entirely cliche, Greenwald has been able to live up to it with great sincerity in the past.Sophia, set in 1941, has more historical depth than her previous films and doubles down on racial commentary, but the story falls short when it comes to character complexity and revival.

As always, this Greenwald film is consistently told from the point of view of the female characters. Anne Morrison (Margo Martindale) is a South Carolina widow whose greatest passion is her garden. Her friend, Sophie Willis (Julianne Nicholson), is an artist whose fiancé died in World War I, little aware. Mrs. Morrison takes him into her care and enlists the help of Salome Whitmore (Lorraine Toussaint), a new maid who doesn’t mind looking after an Asian guy. The two quickly find out that the man’s name is Grover Ohta and he’s Japanese-American.

This last fact is obvious to the viewer, as is the potential for violence during this time. Because of this, mostSophiaThe plot of The shouldn’t surprise anyone. But it was something Greenwald was well aware of. Unfortunately, she doesn’t attempt to portray Ohta’s burgeoning relationship with his mentor — and with Sophie — with a sense of urgency, or really anything more than a slow pace (read: boring). With Pearl Harbor nearby and the United States at war, it’s no surprise that the city will be wary of its new visitors and that some good guys will decide to call yellow-skinned “foreigners.” hit and stab. But the heart of the film – the love story between Ohta and Sophie – continues to unfold. They connected through pictures and walked together, but nothing happened between them until the second half. As a result, the film is skewed for narrative purposes, spending more time on general racism than on the abuse stemming from their relationship.

And the description of Japanese persecution at such a tense time in history is complemented by the addition of Salome’s story. To some extent, this subplot seems to benefit the story, as it expands the commentary on race compared to Ohta, and provides an interesting contrast between the hatred caused by the war and the hatred of African Americans’ longstanding subjugation. problem isSophia, an adaptation (written by Greenwald) of the Augusta Trobaugh novel, is overly one-sided with these intractable stories. Ohta’s story is so stereotyped that it’s considered underdeveloped, thinly drawn, and certainly simplified to facilitate storytelling. And Salome’s story is reduced to a total of five minutes and ends with Sophie recognizing her childhood friend as the maid – a fact she hadn’t realized before because I think it was her. She never looked at the maid.

There are many possibilities in thatSophie and the rising sunto tell not only a compelling dramatic romance, but also the convergence of racial injustice in this time context. But even in the most dramatic moments, there was a lack of intensity. Greenwald maintains the lightness of a rosy vision of the past in the film’s relaxed pace, in stark contrast to a story that attempts to sabotage it. Despite these shortcomings, the actors – particularly Martindale and Yamaguchi – deliver performances that go beyond the bounds of the over-impressive screenplay. It’s a pity, however, that a film with such a timely message of tolerance couldn’t muster the necessary power.
