The 500 Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins is a children’s book, written and illustrated by Theodor Geisel under the pen name Dr. Seuss and published by Vanguard Press in 1938. Unlike the majority of Geisel’s books, it is written in prose rather than rhyming and metered verse. Geisel, who collected hats, got the idea for the story on a commuter train from New York to New England while he was sitting behind a businessman wearing a hat; the passenger was so stiff and formal that Geisel idly wondered what would happen if Geisel took his hat and threw it out the window. Geisel concluded that the man was so “stuffy” he would just grow a new one.

Set in feudal times, the story begins in the Kingdom of Didd, when King Derwin is riding through a street past peasant protagonist Bartholomew Cubbins. Ordered to remove his hat, according to the laws, Bartholomew does so, but another hat mysteriously appears; when he attempts to remove this one, yet another one appears; as this continues, the hats begin to grow in extravagance and beauty from the 451st hat onwards. Ultimately the 500th hat, studded with massive gems and gilding, leaves Bartholomew’s head bare. Stunned by the beauty of the hat, King Derwin grants him reprieve and trades him 500 gold coins for the 500th hat.

The book received positive reviews from critics. The New York Times reviewer called the book “a lovely bit of tomfoolery which keeps up the suspense and surprise until the end.”[1] Booklist, which had criticized Geisel’s previous book, And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street, for containing only enough material for one comic strip, praised The 500 Hats as “a brand-new idea, developed into a complete tale, not too long, not too short, just right. Somewhere between the Sunday supplements and the Brothers Grimm, Dr. Seuss has produced a picture book combining features of both.” Alexander Laing, who had worked with Geisel on the Dartmouth Jack-O-Lantern humor magazine, wrote in his review of the book in the Dartmouth Alumni Magazine, “His several other occupations, madly fascinating as they are, may have been only preludes to a discovery of his proper vocation. That he is a rare and loopy genius has been common knowledge from an early epoch of his undergrad troubles. It now becomes plain that his is the self-consistent, happy madness beloved by children. I do not see what is to prevent him from becoming the Grimm of our times.”

I make these videos so that you can expose your children to read aloud stories without having to be the one reading all the time, but please remember, that nothing substitutes the power of you, the parent, sharing stories with your children. Those shared moments will be sweet memories to your children throughout their lives. So enjoy my videos, but please please please do whatever it takes to make time to read stories to your kids. Please do that. And thank you for everything you do to raise these new little people.

This is a quick summary and analysis of The 500 Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins by Dr. Seuss.

This is a story about a boy named Bartholomew Cubbins who wears an ordinary hat with unusual properties.

He walks into town and King Derwin, king of the Kingdom of Didd, rides by. All of the townspeople show their respect by removing their hats, but the king notices that Bartholomew still has a hat on his head. He confronts the boy, but Bartholomew explains that he did remove his hat. However, he realizes that there is another hat on his head.

King Derwin is upset by this and has Bartholomew taken back to his castle for questioning.

In trying to understand how the boy can remove his hat, yet another one appears on his head, the king calls upon a series of court experts to try and explain this phenomenon. The court recorder is also assigned to count the running number of hats that appear.

Even the king’s nephew, Grand Duke Wilfred, tries to help, but fails when he shoots the hat off with an arrow.

With no explanation of the constant hats, Wilfred suggests that they push Bartholomew off the castle tower.

As they climb the stairs of the tower, Bartholomew continues to produce hats from his head, but the hats become fancier and fancier, until, when he gets to the top, the king is impressed by the hat on the boy’s head.

In the end, the king buys the hat and Bartholomew takes the gold back to his family.

As always, a lot can be said about this story, but what draws my interest and attention is the idea of the misunderstanding of hidden gifts.

As one of the few popular stories by Dr. Seuss not written in rhyme, this story is quite complex in its theme. Essentially, what do the hats represent?

This story speaks to individuals who have hidden gifts and talents that others initially don’t understand. And often times, like the king, others become annoyed by this talent rather than appreciate it for what it is.

Think about it. The king spends all of his resources to call on a variety of experts to understand how these hats keep appearing, but only as a means of stopping, not cherishing this miracle.

Likewise, there are a lot of people out there that, when they see an unusual talent, don’t try to nurture it, but try to destroy it.

And like all talents, they mature and develop over time. We see this as Bartholomew’s hats evolve to become more extravagant towards the end of the story.

Notably, his final hat is removed and his head is bare. Perhaps this a commentary on an artist, someone who gives it their all, and after expending all of their energies into their work, they are left empty.
