Multi-read content turtles all the way down summary

The turtles all went undertells the story of Aza Holmes, an Indiana teenager living with a mental illness. Aza deals with intrusive thoughts and compulsive behaviors, particularly those related to bacteria. She learns oftenC. other, a bacterium that can cause deadly infections. She also focuses on her middle finger, where the callus she normally opens is bleeding. When Aza thinks about the bacteria around her in the school cafeteria, her best friend Daisy tries to get Aza’s attention to ask her about Davis Pickett. Aza knew Davis from camp and knew he came from a wealthy family. Daisy tells Aza that there is a reward for information on Russell Pickett, Davis’ father, who has gone missing. After school, Aza and Daisy change plans to bring Daisy to work so they can go to Pickett’s property to investigate.

Aza learns of a camera in the woods on the edge of Pickett’s property. On camera she finds a photo of Russell the night he went missing. While Aza and Daisy were looking at the photos, Lyle, Pickett’s security guard, found them. He takes her to the Pickett house, where Davis sees Aza and tells Lyle he knows her. Daisy tells Davis that Aza has a crush on him and Davis tells Aza that he thinks of her often. They exchange phone numbers hoping to keep in touch, but Davis expresses concern that she’s just after the bounty. He wished she’d come for him, not the money.

Despite telling Daisy that she is not looking for a romantic relationship, Aza keeps thinking about Davis. Meanwhile, Daisy continues to encourage Aza to find out more information about Russell’s disappearance so they can claim the reward. Aza fears that the investigation will involve Davis, but she keeps looking anyway. They discover that Russell left his fortune to study the tuatara (a lizard-like reptile known for its long life) and nothing for his sons, and he’s in trouble, legal troubles related to unethical business practices.

Aza and Davis ended up texting each other and they double dated with Daisy and her boyfriend Mychal. After dinner, the four went to Pickett’s house and Aza and Davis walked out. They share vulnerable details about their lives as they gaze up at the sky. Aza shares some of her intrusive thoughts and tells Davis that she feels out of control of her life. He told her about the pain of losing his mother and that his father wasn’t there. Davis was afraid that Aza was still after the bounty and might not really like him, so he offered her $100,000 as a reward for not revealing any information about the turn of events.

Aza tells Daisy that Davis gave them $100,000 not to share information with the police. They split the money and Daisy started making big holiday purchases, like buying a car and a laptop. Aza disapproves of Daisy’s expenses and continues to see Davis. Aza enjoys being with Davis and eventually decides to kiss him. As they kiss, intrusive thoughts about the bacteria they might exchange while kissing distract Aza. She apologizes and compulsively rinses her mouth to clean herself. The next day she told her psychiatrist, Dr. Singh, from this new panic. dr Singh points out that even good change is stressful, and she encourages Aza to take her medication every day, although Aza worries it will take away her control of who she is.

Aza struggles to adjust to the changes in her life. She worries about Davis and his fatherless brother Noah. At Noah’s request, she continued her search for information. Noah sends Aza notes from Russell’s left-at-home phone to help Aza with her research. Aza’s fear of bacteria from kissing Davis persists, and she feels compelled to drink hand sanitizer to kill the new bacteria. Aza’s relationship with Daisy is also affected as Daisy fears she will lose money if Aza gets more information. Aza also felt hurt after reading Daisy’s fan fiction, which featured a character with personalities similar to Aza’s and was described as stupid and easy to hate.

Aza eventually confronts Daisy about her portrayal of a racist character in her stories when Aza urges her to go to work. Tired of drinking hand sanitizer and distracted by yelling at Daisy, Aza causes a car crash. Aza was hospitalized after the accident because her liver was ruptured, which made her even more worried because she was afraid of the bacteria. In the hospital, Aza’s mind spun. She constantly apologizes to Daisy and becomes obsessed with the bacteria around her. She ends up having to get up to drink hand sanitizer to kill the bad bacteria, which worries her mother and causes more damage to her liver. Aza’s mother and Dr. Singh pay more and more attention to Aza and Dr. Singh adjusts medicine for Aza. She assures Aza that her thoughts are not hers and that there is hope.

Aza reconciles with Daisy when she returns to school after being hospitalized, but Aza and Davis break up. Aza explained that she had trouble being around him in person, and Davis told her he couldn’t get close to her on the phone. Aza attends an art show with Daisy and Mychal. It was there that she realized the meaning of one of Russell’s phone messages. Aza speaks to Davis for the first time since the breakup and tells him that she thinks she knows where Russell is, but he is probably dead. Davis and Noah decide to report the location to the police and find Russell’s body. Davis sends Aza a present, but they don’t talk further. Aza contemplates Heaven, and at this point realizes that she can envision a future filled with possibility, instead of the hopelessness she previously felt at how she might never be around everyone now. She admits that she is not simply controlled by outside forces in her life.
