As a tradition, people in many European and Latin American countries celebrate their name day once a year. This date is specific to your first name and its origin. The tradition of celebrating this day has returned to Catholic and Orthodox countries since the Middle Ages and continues to this day. Although people in North America do not necessarily celebrate this day (other than on a person’s birthday), many cultures still cherish this day.

This became a popular topic when George R.R. Martin, author of Game of Thrones, covers the subject in his books and later television series. While Martin doesn’t clearly define for us what a name day is, he does mention a name date coinciding with a birthday. After reading or watching, fans of the series have speculated that a name date is the character’s birthday.

So what’s the name of the day?, and where is it celebrated?

The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines a name day as “the ecclesiastical festival of the saint for whom one is named.”

Many cultures and countries around the world make celebrating dates with these specific names a priority. Bulgaria, Croatia, Greece, Italy and Russia are just some of the countries that honor this festival.

In many cultures, given names are associated with the days of the year. The association between dates and names arose for many reasons, but mainly because the church held a feast for a saint by that name that day. For example, the feast day of St. Michael’s Church is celebrated on September 29th, hence Michael’s name day is September 29th.

While each culture may have different traditions when it comes to naming dates, they all have one thing in common: names. It doesn’t matter whether your name is Michelle or Karl, you have two special days of the year just for yourself! While your birthday is truly special, your name day also carries a lot of meaning.

A name day is a tradition in some countries in Europe, Latin America, Catholic and Orthodox Christian countries in general. It consists of celebrating a day of the year that is associated with one’s given name. The celebration is similar to a birthday.

The custom originated with the Christian calendar of saints: believers named after a saint would celebrate that saint’s feast day, or in the Eastern Orthodox tradition, the day of a saint’s death. Name days have greater resonance in the Catholic and Orthodox parts of Europe—Protestant churches showing less veneration of saints. In many countries, however, name-day celebrations no longer have connection to explicitly Christian traditions.
