Snow has covered most of the country in the past few days. Have you ever wondered why snow is white? Light marshmallow snow dazzles us with its sparkling white color as it reflects white rays of light. Rather than absorbing light, snow’s complex structure prevents light from passing through its web formation.

The ray of white sunlight that hits the snowdrift is quickly scattered by millions of ice crystals and air pockets, so most of the light reflects directly off the snowdrift. What snow absorbs less sunlight is absorbed evenly across the visible light wavelengths, turning the snow white.

So while many natural objects are blue, red, and yellow by absorbing light, snow remains white because it reflects light.

Here are some fun facts about snow! You know?

– Snow can be seen in different colors. Snow can be red if the air contains red dust particles during snow formation. The snowflakes that form around these toxic dust particles are reddish in color. Red snow is found in parts of Europe where the air is filled with dust particles from the red sands of the Sahara. Also, some algae are snow yellow, purple, orange, green, and red. In fact, some people believe that the red algae that give it its snow-red color actually looks and tastes like watermelon!

– The word albedo is based on the Latin word for white. Albedo refers to the amount/percentage of light that an object reflects. For example, the albedo of water is low while the albedo of snow is high.

– No two snowflakes are exactly alike.

When the air temperature rises above 32 degrees Fahrenheit during a snowstorm, the snow melts and falls as rain.
