Multi-read content writing sample for graduate school
From ProFellow founder Dr. Vicky Johnson
I supervise my college graduatesFully funded course and mentoring programwho’s trying to get infully funded doctoral and masters programs. Many graduate programs require applicants to submit writing samples, so I often get questions like, “What writing sample should I submit?” I want to give you a glimpse of how the selection committees evaluate writing samples so you can choose one that gives you the best possible chances of being admitted to the ideal graduate program.
A writing sample, such as a transcript or letter of recommendation, is one way to gauge your potential for success in a graduate program. Admissions committees will review your writing sample to learn how you engage with new ideas, engage in current conversations in your field, structure your research, and explicitly present a theory or argument. They also use this component to assess your academic writing and critical thinking skills. The faculty strives to select candidates who have the skills needed to be successful and who they know can mentor them effectively.
Tips for choosing the right writing pattern
#1 Choose a writing sample that reflects the type of writing you will do in your graduate program
Some graduate programs are research-based, while others are more professional or creative in nature. Your writing sample should reflect the type of writing, analysis, research, or publication you want to achieve as a graduate. This gives the admissions committee a clear understanding of how you might be a good fit for their program. If you are interested in a research-based graduate program such asPhD or Masters of Science, your writing sample should reflect your experience in writing research papers. Likewise, if you sign up for a professional program such asMaster of Business Administration (MBA)orMaster of Public Administration (MPA)then an article demonstrating your experience in creating business case studies or policy analysis would be an appropriate option. For aMaster of Fine Arts in Creative Writing, your best creative writing template should be included. For a journalism program, a long article would be best. In other words, do not submit a writing sample that does not reflect the type of work you will be doing in your graduate program!
#2: Don’t write something new, but update your writing sample if necessary
Your writing sample most likely comes from a term paper or thesis that was prepared and reviewed by professors during your last university experience, regardless of whether it is a bachelor’s or master’s degree. . Excerpts from an advanced graduate course or master’s thesis can work well, but any work that has a careful connection to important ideas in your field (and meets the requirements. over the minimum length!) is all worth considering. If you received the best grade for your work during your studies, it may not need to be improved and can be submitted as is. However, you can use the feedback you get from your students to improve the structure of the work, answer unanswered questions, or add new citations (just don’t change the work too much!).
Most importantly, I don’t recommend writing a new writing sample from scratch just for the purposes of your application, especially if you don’t have the time or resources to seek feedback from your professor. Developing a new writing template can also distract you from preparing other important parts of your application, such as:Personal opinion. Articles about your major are ideal, but if your best work is in a different field, or the topic or conclusion is outdated, you can submit it as long as it is well written (student), as the selection committee is most interested in an assessment Your writing, research and analytical skills, not your expertise on the subject of your future study.
#3 Choose a writing sample that is academic in nature
Unless you are enrolling in a graduate program in journalism or creative writing, your writing sample should be academic in nature and demonstrate an academic commitment to ideas. Avoid submitting essays, memoirs, blogs, or articles or guest comments that you have written and instead choose articles that you have prepared for your topic. Think about the specific research you’ve done and what you’ve contributed to your field so far, and choose a template that demonstrates your ability to summarize information and come up with new ideas.
Make sure your sample writing isn’t just a summary of previous research. Be sure to emphasizeyoursideas andyoursdiscuss them and at the same time place them in a very specific, already existing conversation in your area. You want your selection committee to have enough context for your writing sample to know how to guide your growth as a researcher, author, and scholar, but you also want them to fulfill your potential and become an active and effective voice in your field .
Last tip: read the instructions!
Even if you are applying to multiple graduate programs in the same field, different universities tend to have different sample writing requirements. Some want up to ten pages; others allow up to twenty. In other cases, more than one writing sample is required. Make sure you limit your optionswhere do you apply?before you start selecting and editing your writing templates. Being clear about what you can expect from your writing test can save you a lot of time in the long run!

What’s up, guys! In this video, I share with you the writing sample I submitted with my application for the Education Studies PhD program at the University of California San Diego. In your writing sample, for graduate school, you should be submitting a document that showcases not only your strengths in writing, but also that you could contribute to your field of study. I created this channel because I did not have access to many resources when I was applying for graduate programs. Now that I have been through two graduate school application processes, I want to share my knowledge and the helpful information I have gained through those experiences.
Additionally, for the past four years, I have been working as a Retention Specialist and Director for a federally-funded program at a higher education institution. I spent these four years helping over 400 students to apply to four-year institutions, attain scholarships, and navigate the higher education system. I created this channel in order to share my knowledge of college access as it pertains to graduate school.
