After the legendary performance athcmf // 2018, where they stunned audiences with two concerts of Rebecca Saunders’ new work, Cologne-based ensemble Musikfabrik returned to the festival with new roles. With a penchant for interpreting conceptual works and a commitment to meeting the dual demands of composers, they take actiontinker light, a masterpiece of musical mechanics by residence composer Chaya Czernowin, as well asprocession, a gnarly new work by Enno Poppe.
Withtinker light, it is the process, not the final form, that Chaya Czernowin pursues. Described by the composer as a “construction ceremony”, the spiral tonal structure of the work suggests a structure of its own. Still a work in progress, it is in a permanently created state; The Ensemble Musikfabrik does it in cycles and accepts trial and error in putting it together.tinker lightis a testament to Czernowin’s vision of music as something architecturally connected: it can be put together and we can go into it. It shows the inner workings of the sound, the tunnels and corridors within.
As careful as he is with the alchemy behind his music, you won’t get much out of the title of an Enno Poppe piece. Conductor and composer visitedhcmf //with a spate of tracks in recent years that are all speculative differential experiments. For his tribute, he performed as part of mosaik’s passionate synth orchestrabroadcastin 2018 and has gradually increased, octaves upsweatperformed by Norbotten NEO in 2019. His new work, procession, written during the pandemic, quickly germinated through a series of writing sessions. It grew from nine separate pieces to a total of 81. Weaving a series of melodic duets and evolving solos, the piece is an exercise in flux, ultimately finding its own currents and using it to sift through all of Poppe’s documents.
