From a 2001 VHS program called “World Regions,” made by National Geographic and Glencoe McGraw-Hill. The program contained four VHS tapes and spanned from Units 1 – 11 in the textbook. I found the box set in the World Geography supply closet at the school I teach at.

Welcome to another Word Regional Geography discussion, this time Professor Jeremy Patrich introduces you to the realm of Northern Africa and Southwest Asia. Don’t forget, there are also sample exam questions at the end of the video!

North Africa has three main geographic features: the Sahara desert in the south, the Atlas Mountains in the west, and the Nile River and delta in the east. The Atlas Mountains extend across much of northern Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia. These mountains are part of the fold mountain system that also runs through much of Southern Europe. They recede to the south and east, becoming a steppe landscape before meeting the Sahara desert, which covers more than 75% of the region. The tallest peaks are in the High Atlas range in south-central Morocco, which has many snow-capped peaks.

South of the Atlas Mountains is the dry and barren expanse of the Sahara desert, which is the largest sand desert in the world. In places, the desert is cut by irregular watercourses called wadis—streams that flow only after rainfalls but are usually dry. The Sahara’s major landforms include ergs, large seas of sand that sometimes form into huge dunes; the hammada, a level rocky plateau without soil or sand; and the reg, a level plain of gravel or small stones. The Sahara covers the southern part of Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia, and most of Libya. Only two regions of Libya are outside the desert: Tripolitania in the northwest and Cyrenaica in the northeast. Most of Egypt is also desert, except the Nile River and the irrigated land along its banks. The Nile Valley forms a narrow, fertile thread that runs along the length of the country.

Sheltered valleys in the Atlas Mountains, the Nile Valley and Delta, and the Mediterranean coast are the main sources of fertile farming land. A wide variety of valuable crops, including cereals, rice and cotton, and woods such as cedar and cork, are grown. Typical Mediterranean crops, such as olives, figs, dates and citrus fruits, also thrive in these areas. The Nile Valley is particularly fertile, and most of the population in Egypt live close to the river. Elsewhere, irrigation is essential to improve crop yields on the desert margins.

The Middle East is a transcontinental region in Afro-Eurasia which generally includes Western Asia (except for Transcaucasia), all of Egypt (mostly in North Africa), and Turkey (partly in Southeast Europe). The term has come into wider usage as a replacement of the term Near East (as opposed to the Far East) beginning in the early 20th century. The broader concept of the “Greater Middle East” (aka the Middle East and North Africa or the MENAP) also includes the Maghreb, Sudan, Djibouti, Somalia, Comoros, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and sometimes Transcaucasia and Central Asia into the region. The term “Middle East” has led to some confusion over its changing definitions.

In this lesson, we examine the physical geography of the Middle East and North Africa. The lesson begins by defining the region including the Levant and the different countries that are included in this sub-reaching.

The lesson continues by examining the major bodies of water that surround the region. These include the Mediterranean Sea, Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, Arabian Sea, Gulf of Oman, and the Persian Gulf. We even take a peak at the Dead Sea.

Connecting these bodies of water are some critical chokepoints or straits which include the Strait of Gibraltar, Suez Canal, Bab el-Mandeb, and the Strait of Hormuz. We discuss how vital these narrow passages are and how conflict or piracy can impact the world due to the amount of trade that flows through them each day.

Then we discuss the climate and the region’s deserts which include the Sahara, Arabian, Rub al-Khali, Syrian, and Negev Deserts.
