Multi-read content the jim carroll band people who died

Poet, writer and rock musician Jim Carroll is also known as the Bob Dylan of the 80s. Watching him perform is like witnessing history! After hearing his song “People Who Died” on KROQ World Famous, attending his first concert in Los Angeles was a “must see”! The song resonates with such a high level of poetry that it definitely stands out from all the other songs on the radio. From the lyrics to the actual production, his debut album “Catholic Boy” is an absolute genius.

Jim Carroll expressed the dreaded anticipation, optimistic nihilism and glittering darkness of the 1980s we felt there; even if we cannot communicate on our own. When John Lennon was assassinated off Dakota in December 1980, “People Who Died” was the second most requested song on FM radio, behind only Lennon’s own “Imagine”.

Many magazines including Newsweek and Rolling Stone have printed that we are the new contenders for the Rock n’ Roll Championship! The release of his debut album, Catholic Boy, in 1980 coincided with the re-publication of his best-selling autobiographical book, The Basketball Diaries. There were even rumors that Carroll would be nominated for a Pulitzer Prize. The mainstream press was amazed that a punk musician would be considered for the most prestigious literary award.

Jim Carroll has “a voice of his own” and he’s grown up the hard way. He was born in New York in 1950 to a third generation Irish bartender. At age 12, he moved to the Upper East Side, where he began writing what would later become The Basketball Diary. The book is essentially about his teenage years. Carroll is not only a born novelist, but also a basketball player extraordinaire. In fact, he’s won numerous titles for his spins, but he’s lived a double life, becoming addicted to heroin and succumbing to male prostitution to survive. At age 13, he met a slew of great writers who “outdid” that magical time, such as Allen Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac, and William S. Burroughs. Everyone marveled at his writing skills and even called him a “born writer”.
He began to pursue his passion for music in his late teens, and through Andy Warhol he became friends with Bob Dylan and Lou Reed of The Velvet Underground. However, he owes his musical credit to rock poet/singer Patti Smith.

In 1973, Carroll fled N.Y.C. and made his way west to California to finally break his heroin addiction. He was keen on having his own band but felt compelled to write lyrics for other artists to incorporate into the music.
Patti Smith performed in San Diego and invited Jim to fly down and watch the show. When the opening act was canceled there was a “bruise ha ha” so Ms Smith advised Carroll to perform with her band as a backup. I was fortunate enough to attend this performance in the recreation room at San Diego State University, and I have to admit that my attention was on Patti Smith, not Jim Carroll.
Jim Carroll’s talent began to spread in the movies. Young Leonardo DiCaprio played Carroll in the 1995 film adaptation of Basketball Diary. Interestingly, the film also stars Mark Whalberg and Lorraine Bracco.

The power of the film was blamed for two mass shootings at different high schools in 1999, including that at Denver’s Columbine High School. Carroll sympathizes with the families of the murdered victims but is not held accountable.

Another great Carroll song, “It’s Too Late” was used in the 1985 film “Tuff Turf” starring Robert Downey Jr. and the young James Spder. Carroll’s band made a cameo appearance in the film starring The Last Game of High School.

Check out ‘People Who Died’ by The Jim Carroll Band off their album ‘Catholic Boy’. Recently featured in the new ‘Suicide Squad 2’ film.

Jim Carroll expressed the Bomb-fear anticipation, the optimistic nihilism and glittering darkness of the 1980s that we who were there felt even if we couldn’t communicate it ourselves. When John Lennon was assassinated in front of the Dakota in December 1980, “People Who Died” was one of the most-requested songs on FM radio, just after Lennon’s own “Imagine.” Steven Spielberg chose “People Who Died” to play during the opening scene of E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial. “People Who Died” tapped a mainline. It was a hit even before it was released, and, as Newsweek’s Barbara Graustark noted, it “propelled [Carroll] from underground status… to national attention as a contender for the title of rock’s new poet laureate.”

Teddy sniffing glue he was twelve years old

Fell from the roof on East Two-nine

Cathy was eleven when she pulled the plug

On twenty six reds and a bottle of wine

Bobby got leukemia, fourteen years old

He looked like sixty five when he died

He was a friend of mine

Those are people who died, died

Those are people who died, died

Those are people who died, died

Those are people who died, died

They were all my friends and just died

G-berg and Georgie let their gimmicks go rotten

So they died of hepatitis in upper Manhattan

Sly in Vietnam, bullet in the head

Bobby OD’d on Drano on the night that he was wed

They were two more friends of mine (two more friends that died)

Those are people who died, died

Those are people who died, died

Those are people who died, died

Those are people who died, died

They were all my friends and they died

Mary took a dry dive from a hotel room

Bobby hung himself from a cell in The Tombs

Judy jumped in front of a subway train

Eddie got slit in the jugular vein

And Eddie, I miss you more than all the others

And I salute you brother

Those are people who died, died

Those are people who died, died

Those are people who died, died

Those are people who died, died

They were all my friends, and they died

Herbie pushed Tony from the Boys’ Club roof

Tony thought that his rage was just some goof

But Herbie sure gave Tony some, some bitchen proof

Hey, Herbie said, Tony, can you fly?

But Tony couldn’t fly, Tony died

Those are people who died, died

Those are people who died, died

Those are people who died, died

Those are people who died, died

They were all my friends and they died

Brian got busted on a narco rap

He beat the rap by rattin’ on some bikers

He said, hey, I know it’s dangerous

But it sure beats Riker’s

But the next day he got offed

By the very same bikers

Those are people who died, died

Those are people who died, died

Those are people who died, died

Those are people who died, died

They were all my friends, and they died

Teddy sniffing glue he was twelve years old
