Welcome to book review 3 in my adoption series.

Title: The lost Child of Philomena Lee (Also edited later as “Philomena”)

Author: Martin Sixsmith

A story of a young Irish girl, Philomena, in Ireland finding herself pregnant at 18 years old with no husband or man to marry. Unacceptable in 1950’s Ireland to be a single mother, she has no choice but to leave her father and siblings (mother passed away early in life) and head to a convent to have the child out of sight.

A harrowing part of this book is when the baby after 3 years with mother living in the convent is removed and adopted out to welathy American couple looking to adopt. Anthony Lee, Philomena’s son is taken away to be adopted and live in America. Philomena, devastated cannot find where her son went as both church and government block any attempts to find out his location.

This story then continues into Athony’s life in America, growing up, opportunities given, and his journey into politics and into life as a gay man who has to hide his identity in political circles.

Messages I received as an adoptee is that the chirch effected even my own adotpion in that society had applied pressure for young mothers to give up their children. Other take aways include not living your authentic self, shown as Anthony/Michael Hess the adult child of Philomena, as he pursued a career in politics in the republican party, a party he detested as a young man. Further more his own party was looking at laws to limit the rights of all gay people taking away basic rights. Indeed Michael was conflicted in many ways holding down this position in politics answering to the president himself Ronald Regan.

This was an interesting book in the pressures and coercion applied to young mothers to give up their babies for couples who could not conceive happened all over the world.

If born in th eclosed adoption era, then this book will resonate as the impact of child separation from mother is felt decades into the future.

In Theatres November 29!

Based on the 2009 investigative book by BBC correspondent Martin Sixsmith, The Lost Child of Philomena Lee, PHILOMENA focuses on the efforts of Philomena Lee (Dench), mother to a boy conceived out of wedlock — something her Irish-Catholic community didn’t have the highest opinion of — and given away for adoption in the United States. In following church doctrine, she was forced to sign a contract that wouldn’t allow for any sort of inquiry into the son’s whereabouts. After starting a family years later in England and, for the most part, moving on with her life, Lee meets Sixsmith (Coogan), a BBC reporter with whom she decides to discover her long-lost son.

Philomena is the true story of one mother’s search for her lost son. Falling pregnant as a teenager in Ireland in 1952, Philomena Lee was sent to the convent of Roscrea to be looked after as a “fallen woman”. When her baby was only a toddler, he was whisked away by the nuns to America for adoption. Philomena (Judi Dench) spent the next fifty years searching for him in vain. Then she met Martin Sixsmith, a world-weary journalist as cynical as Philomena was trusting. Together they set off for America on a journey that would not only reveal the extraordinary story of Philomena’s son, but also the powerful bond that grew between Philomena and Martin.

Based on Sixsmith’s acclaimed book “The Lost Child of Philomena Lee: A Mother, Her Son and a Fifty-Year Search”, the film is a bitter-sweet drama, a compelling narrative of human love and loss and ultimately a celebration of life. Judi Dench’s phenomenal lead performance has “Oscar” written all over it.
