Wait a minute? The earth is really flat, you hear?

Joke! Thanks to the ancient Greeks, we know that the earth has been round for at least 2,000 years. In fact, the vast majority of objects in our solar system are spherical, from the Sun to the planets and the moon.

So why are planets spherical? Why don’t we live on a cylindrical or cubic planet?

main culpritgravity. Every object with mass in the universe exerts a gravitational force pulling it towards the center of the object. For a planet, everything is pulled towards its center – so when you drop them, objects fall to the ground, and when you jump, you land back on Earth. When Earth formed 4.6 billion years ago, it was made up of molten matter that gravity pulled into spheres that solidified as the planet cooled.

Some objects in the solar system are too small to be squeezed into a sphere – Mars’ moons, for example, are potato-shaped, and asteroids are mostly irregular.

But even planets aren’t perfect. Their shape is scientifically described as a “spherical sphere” because they are all slightly bulging in the middle (like a tangerine or half-inflated balloon).

This means that if you circumnavigate the Earth from the North Pole to the South Pole and back, you will travel approximately 39,931 km. But if you walk around the equator, you’ll travel 40,070 km – pretty close to a perfect sphere, but not quite. Saturn is the largest of the planets and is 10% thicker around the equator than at the poles.

This bulge is the result of rotation. Gravity tries to make planets spherical, while their rotational speed tries to suffocate them.

The faster the planet spins, the less round it is. Think of a Ferris wheel – it’s hard to stay on the sides when spinning fast because centrifugal force pushes away all the outermost mass. Translate this concept to 3D and that’s what inflates a planet’s equator.

Because planets rotate at different speeds, they all have different shapes. Saturn is aspheric – warped – because it rotates fastest, while the Sun is almost perfectly round with its immense gravity and very slow rotation. It’s really a battle between gravity and rotation.

(To a lesser extent, the force of gravityotherobjects also make a difference – the Sun and Moon, for example, change the shape of the Earth, but only slightly.)

Anyway, it is quite convenient for planets to be spherical. Modeling the solar system would be much more complicated if it were tetrahedral, torus, or pentagonal prisms…
