Mike Todd did it!

His first product “In 80 days around the world,” Lensed in the Todd-AO trial, is a journey from start to finish. He brought the classic Jules Verne novel to the big screen with charm and brilliance, embellished the story with big and colorful visual values and a healthy sense of humor, and turned out to be the most exciting global travel story book ever made.

With a star-studded lineup in peak and off-season, Todd has put on a solid hit.

What Americans at one point disliked was the thrilling adventures of the intrepid Brit Phileas Fogg, who, in order to win a bet, traveled the world in a “record time” of 80 days, using every means of transport from ships and boats to elephants and hot air balloons. Well, it’s all here on screen, every penny of the $5,000,000 to $6,000,000 that went into production.

The cast, played by David Niven as Fogg, Mexican Cantinflas as Passepartout, Robert Newton as Mr. Fix and Shirley MacLaine as Aouda, the Indian Maharanee, were chosen intelligently and with a witty and clever script by S.J. Perelman (he was the only one, at least). , which received on-screen acclaim; those others who have done so are John Farrow and James Poe) who act on some of the most dramatic lenticular backdrops seen in a long time. It all adds up to a mix of spectacle and comedy that will appeal to audiences from young to old.

Here’s another long picture – two hours and 55 minutes plus intermission. But this time there will be few complaints. Very little time was wasted and the story continued as Fogg and company traveled from London to Paris, then by hot air balloon to Spain and the bullfights; thence to Marseilles and India, where Fogg and Passepartout saved the beautiful MacLaine from being burned at the stake; to Hong Kong, Japan, San Francisco, across the country by train to New York (despite the Indian attack) and then back to England where Fogg thought he lost his bet but played at the last minute East had reached a day and was winner.

Thanks Todd for doing his best to offer customers value for money. Directed by Lionel Lindon and starring Kevin McCrory, 80 Days is a lively, fast-paced action film but still takes its time to get the good laughs and the wonderful setting. Todd’s “Induction” is consistently rich in evidence. This painting was made with ingenuity and the customer is guaranteed to eat it.

The writer-director (Michael Anderson) balances the story deftly, weaving in a variety of top names without ever losing ground in the mainline. It’s a little trick and it’s great. There is never a landscape for the sake of viewing, and never a story without rich context. The Todd AO system is used properly here for the first time, filling the screen with amazing effects. Images are incredibly sharp and depth of field, aided by Lindon lenses, stands out in many scenes. Eastman paint processed by Technicolor helps combine rich effects of scenery and costumes.

Niven, as Fogg, is the perfect epitome of an outspoken and rather considered English gentleman, a caricature of 19th-century English propriety. Join him in a performance. The standout actor is Mexican star Cantinflas (Mario Moreno) as Passepartout. He had a Chaplinesque quality that made him instantly endearing, and his antics brought laughter along with laughter of amusement. As a master imitator, Cantinflas was instrumental in the film’s success. His bullfighting solo is a classic. Robert Newton as Mr Fix, the detective looking for Fogg, who he suspects robbed the Bank of London, is comic series throughout, and Miss MacLaine is attractive as the princess.

Rarely can a photo come up with so many star names. To name just a few of the more important ones: John Carradine as the pompous Colonel Proctor; Finlay Currie, Ronald Squires, Basil Sydney, A.E. Matthews and Trevor Howard as members of the Reform Club who bet against Fogg; Fernandel as coachman in Paris; Robert Morley as the wayward Governor of the Bank of England; Sir Cedric Hardwicke as a colonial warrior; Red Skelton, like a drunkard; Marlene Dietrich and George Raft. There are many others including Frank Sinatra in a snapshot as a pianist. Jose Greco waves a fandango on his heel at the beginning of the scene.

Todd wisely doesn’t just rely on names. All are well integrated. And the names compete with the effects – from the spectacular launch of the hot air balloon in Paris, to the hilarious bullfight, the funeral parade in the Indian jungle, the collapse of the railway bridge, to the attacking Indians and the chaotic streetscape in San Francisco. Combining talents transformed these scenes into eye-catching and thrilling spectacles that boomed and then combined into soft, perfectly composed photographs of kaleidoscopic beauty.

“80 Days” could just be a travelogue. Instead, thanks in large part to Perelman-Todd’s humor, it’s chuckling, not boring at all. Ask Miss MacLaine of Cantinflas (via Niven), “Are there women in his life?” He said, “I suppose he must have had a mother.” Another time, when Cantinflas tipped a waiter in San Francisco, Niven gave him a stern look: “I told you – don’t spoil the locals.”

Humor is sometimes subtle, elsewhere generous. The Indian charge, with redskins infiltrating the train and cavalry riding to the rescue, is reminiscent of Mack Sennett; The scene where Fogg and his crew row past a broken train in a wind barrow is pure joy and fun. The same applies to the dismantling of the autoclave for fuel supply to the boiler. The whole crazy, wonderful story is faithfully staged. Incredibly vibrant and effective, Pic’s sound is a staple.

Edward R. Murrow introducing the image is a bit claustrophobic and lengthy at first, but it serves to establish “time”. Including the 1901 version of Melies in Jules Verne’s Journey to the Moon. Saul Bass’ final tracks paid homage to the taste and imagination, craftsmanship and splendor that characterized this entire Todd production. Victor Young’s musical background is paramount and strongly emphasizes the different moods of the film. His use of the fake “Britannia Rule” makes a notable point.

For Todd himself, 80 Days was his answer to many critics. If someone bets on it against them, they can also start paying now.
