Two-sentence summary: As a graduate student, Ventaktesh befriends J.T. an, a gang leader from Chicago Projects. Over the course of several years, the two formed a strained friendship that gave Ventaktesh unprecedented access to the inner workings of the area and the gang’s role in the community.

One sentence on the review: Ventaktesh’s methods and lack of awareness of the implications of his project were disappointing, but the book is well worth reading as it gives a glimpse into a world almost everyone would be happy to skip.

Long review: In the first semester of graduate schoolSudhir Venkatesh was eager to impress his professors and get to know his research interests. When I was asked to do some survey work at Robert Taylor Homes in Chicago,Venkatesh approached the task with the naïve enthusiasm one would expect from a new student. Within a few hours of starting the surveyVenkatesh is being held hostage by members of the Black Kings, the gang that controls much of the area.

What a surprise,Venkatesh befriends local Black Kings leader J.T. This friendship gaveSupporting Venkatesh J.T. spending more time in the neighborhood asking questions and filling in details on an incredibly detailed ethnographic and economic survey of Chicago projects.

Gang leader for a dayVenkatesh chronicles more than a decade of work and research into the members of this community and the complex relationships between gangs and communities, and J.T. andVenkatesh.

I can’t thank Jill (Fizzy Thoughts) enough for motivating me to read this book. After I commented on her review last year, she emailed me with some other thoughts on how well parts of the book reminded her of what I do as an opinion: How to Become a Journalist. She suggested that moral conflicts and internal problems would be fascinating, and she was right. WhenWhen Venkatesh came to the neighborhood, he brought with him many simple beliefs about how life works in a gang-controlled area. The power of Gang Leader for a Day is the wayVenkatesh shows what it was like for him to live there and shares his insights with the readers.

I was amazed to learn how bonds both harm and benefit the community. While the gang deals drugs in the area, members are also tasked with protecting residents and maintaining order at projects when the police do nothing. While members of the public must pay a “tax” to the gang for these services, things could be even worse on projects without the enforcement gangs than without the gangs.

JT is also a compelling central character in this story. Smart, funny, charismatic and ambitious, J.T. is an interesting example of Venkatesh, and the similarities between the two certainly raise questions of circumstance and opportunity. The men were quite alike, but their circumstances couldn’t have been more different. The book doesn’t explore many of these issues, but it is an intriguing fundamental question.

I can’t say I totally agree with thatVenkatesh’s methods or his continued arguments without realizing some of the implications of his research. at one point,Venkatesh conducts a series of in-depth interviews to see how the project’s informal economy works – services, food, prostitution, childcare. As J.T. and other local guides askedVenkatesh to share his findings, looking forward to discussing his research. Only later did he learn that J.T. used these insights to crack down on all the people on the projects who make money and don’t pay aisle fees.Venkatesh had irreparably compromised his research subjects, and his insistence that he didn’t know what was about to happen seemed pointless.

Other scholars have extensively criticized the book for these methodological and ethical flaws, and these criticisms are justified. You should alternate between researching a community to benefit it and researching to benefit yourself.Venkatesh made a lot of money from this book and his ongoing research, and I’m not sure the members of Robert Taylor Homes saw most of the money come back to them. It’s an ethical question that the book doesn’t seem to answer in detail.

The book is also much less academic than one would expect from a professor. There aren’t many citations or acknowledgments from previous researchers who have done extensive ethnography, but I don’t think that’s necessarily a problem. This book is less about sociological methods and more about a treatise that looks inside what it means to study and to be welcome in a world that most people never see. Once it’s done I can’t wait to read some of itVenkateshsMore serious non-fiction books on Chicago projects and rural poor issues includeBeyond the Book: The Underground Economy of the Urban PoorandProject America: The Rise and Fall of the Modern Slum.

Ultimately, I think this book achieved what nonfiction/light nonfiction memoirs strive for – telling an interesting story in a way that draws the reader to learn more about the subject behind it. I recommend everyone who is interested in these topics to read the book.

The story of the young sociologist who studied a Chicago crack-dealing gang from the inside captured the world’s attention when it was first described in Freakonomics. Gang Leader for a Day is the fascinating full story of how Sudhir Venkatesh managed to gain entrance into the gang, what he learned, and how his method revolutionized the academic establishment.

When Venkatesh walked into an abandoned building in one of Chicago’s most notorious housing projects, he was looking for people to take a multiple-choice survey on urban poverty. A first-year grad student hoping to impress his professors with his boldness, he never imagined that as a result of the assignment he would befriend a gang leader named JT and spend the better part of a decade inside the projects under JT’s protection, documenting what he saw there.

Over the next seven years, Venkatesh got to know the neighborhood dealers, crackheads, squatters, prostitutes, pimps, activists, cops, organizers, and officials. From his privileged position of unprecedented access, he observed JT and the rest of the gang as they operated their crack-selling business, conducted PR within their community, and rose up or fell within the ranks of the gang’s complex organizational structure.

In Hollywood-speak, Gang Leader for a Day is The Wire meets Harvard University. It’s a brazen, page turning, and fundamentally honest view into the morally ambiguous, highly intricate, often corrupt struggle to survive in what is tantamount to an urban war zone. It is also the story of a complicated friendship between Sudhir and JT-two young and ambitious men a universe apart.
