Multi-read content i am a lineman for the county

Imagine this song idea commercial from 1968: there’s this guy working on telephone poles in central Kansas. He is really dedicated to his work. Come rain or shine, he works to prevent system overload. It’s really lonely work and he misses his girlfriend. Does that sound like a hit to you?

When Jimmy Webb wrote the first lines of “Wichita Lineman”…

I’m the one in line for the county and I’m driving on the main road

… Not only did he not think he had a definite hit, but he also didn’t think the song was over. An uneventful start to a song that has sold millions of records for Glen Campbell from Johnny Cash to James Taylor to R.E.M. was recorded and appeared on several playlists.

By late 1967, Jimmy was the most popular musician in L.A. based on two consecutive smash hits: The Fifth Dimension’s “Up, Up And Away” and Glen Campbell’s “By The Time I Get To Phoenix.” “Phoenix” has been on the chart for six months, although Jimmy and Glen haven’t met yet.

Jimmy recently told me, “As far as we know, ‘Phoenix’ could be a one-time thing. “Glen may never record another song of mine.” They eventually met in a jingle exchange. Immediately after that day the phone rang. It’s Glen calling from the studio. “He said, ‘Can you write me a song about a city? ‘” Jimmy recalls. “And I said, ‘Well, I don’t know … let me do it.’ And he said, ‘Well, just something geographical.’

“He and (producer) Al DeLory are clearly looking for a sequel to ‘Phoenix.’ ‘ And I remember writing ‘Wichita Lineman’ that afternoon. It’s a song I wrote entirely for Glen. ”

This is the first time he has written a song for another artist. But was he part of “Wichita” prior to this call?

“Not really,” Jimmy said. “I mean, I had a lot of ‘Steppe Gothic’ images in my head. And I write about the average man, the working-class hero who got caught up in the tide of war, like in “Galveston,” or the guy who drove back to Oklahoma because he couldn’t afford a plane ticket (“Phoenix’). So that’s a character I’ve worked with. And I’ve seen a lot of panoramas of highways and people walking through phone lines… I don’t want to write another song about a city, I want to write a song that will be on the soccer field for him. ”

So even though it was written specifically for Glen, did he still want it to be a “character” song?

“Well, I don’t want it to be about a rich guy!” he laughs. “I wanted it to be about an ordinary person. Billy Joel once came pretty close when he said “Wichita Lineman” was “a simple song about an ordinary man with extraordinary thoughts.” That upsets me; that really brings tears to my eyes. I’ve never told anyone how close to the truth it is.

“What I really mean is that you might see someone who works in construction or in the fields, a migrant worker or a truck driver, and you might think you know. What’s on their mind, but you don’t. You can’t assume that just because someone is doing a hard job, they won’t have a dream…or that extraordinary concepts like “I need you more than I want you; I need you more than I want you; I need you; and i want you all the time “One cannot assume that a man is not a poet. And that’s really what the song is about. “

He’s not sure they will. “Actually, I don’t think they did,” he said. “They called me back every few hours to ask if it was done. I really didn’t write the last verse. And finally I said, “Well, I’m going to send it in, and if you want me to finish it, I’ll finish it.”

“A couple of weeks later I spoke to Glen and said, ‘Well, I guess Wichita Lineman didn’t work out. ‘ And Glen said, ‘Oh yeah! We recorded this song! “And I said, ‘Look, I don’t really think the song’s done…’ And he said, ‘That’s it for now!'”

In a recent interview, Glen said that he and DeLory inserted a third movement that could have been a guitar solo, a movement now considered iconic. He can still remember playing it on a six-string DanElectrobass guitarorbaritone guitarOwned by legendary L.A. bassist and Wrecking Crew member Carol Kaye. It remains Glen’s favorite of all his songs.

“Wichita Lineman” can serve as “Performance A” in any less-is-more performance for musicians. On paper, it’s just two stanzas, each movement consists of two rhyming compound sentences. The record is a three-minute wonder: intro. First sentence. The musical device resembles the staccato telegraph. Second verse. No chorus. guitar solo. Repeat the last two lines of the second sentence (“and I need you more than I want you…”). Fading. No part B, less part C.

Why has such a difficult song become the norm? There are many reasons, but there is one: the loneliness of this lonely savannah silhouette is not only present in the lyrics, it is built into the musical structure. Although the song is nominally on the F key, after an additional chord is given in the introduction, it is never heard again in its pure form with the root in the bass. The tune undergoes a series of haunting changes far more complex than the 40 major radio standards of the era. The song will never again be “homely” to be refilled – neither in the verses nor in the fading phase. This beautiful musical scene beautifully hints at what the lyrics poetically suggest: the lone fellow, left hanging from a telephone pole, facing the desolate grassy landscape, longing for home.

The song’s immortality continued when “Wichita Lineman” was added to the National Recording Registry of the Library of Congress in March 2020.
