Multi-read content jaws the story of a hidden epidemic

There is a potentially serious epidemic that the public health community has just discovered. The most obvious symptom is the increasing frequency of braces in children with crooked teeth. But it also includes snoring, gaping jaws, frequent nasal congestion, behavioral and attention problems, unrecognized sleep disorders (sleep apnea), and a general deterioration in appearance.

These symptoms suggest a construction medicine emergency that has the potential to put dentists, orthodontists and sleep scientists on the front lines of public health professionals. The emergency is part of a collection of serious illnesses linked to mouth breathing and sleep disorders, including heart disease, cancer, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), depression, schizophrenia, paralysis, suicide, asthma and possibly Alzheimer’s.

Disrupted sleep is an extremely serious stressor on human mental and physical well-being. Among other things, it tends to weaken the immune system, makes a person more susceptible to a variety of diseases, and causes myriad changes in the brain that are only partially understood. Add to this the large contribution that sleep deprivation causes to traffic accidents, medical errors, and poor performance at work and school, and you can see how important this is to this unrecognized public health emergency.

tooth connection

Dental bonding results from poor jawbone development, which can be attributed to environmental changes caused by industrialization. A major cause is lifestyle that reduces chewing in a growing child. Since industrialization, children have not been weaned from their parents’ relatively tough meals. Instead, they were switched to baby food with lots of soup.

In fact, children in the early stages of life, who often transition from a plain pap diet to a fast-food diet, become increasingly soft and fluid. Few children can nibble on tough buffalo meat and instead eat burgers, cakes and melt-in-your-mouth candies, sugary sodas and the like.

When mothers are able to breastfeed, many cannot breastfeed long enough, or they can pump on their own and have a caregiver bottle-feed them. They realize that this is good for feeding the baby, but that sucking directly on the breast works the jaw muscles. Milk flowed from the bottle into her mouth, not too much.

This inactivity results in the jaws being undersized and underdeveloped, the teeth being narrow and crooked, the last molars (wisdom teeth) being compromised, the long face becoming unattractive and the jaw set in. To understand why rocket science is hardly necessary. Imagine how foot development would be affected if children were not allowed to walk.

Another environmental change contributing to outbreaks is the move indoors, where allergens like dust mites and formaldehyde are concentrated. Allergies cause congestion and result in mouth breathing. This, in turn, bypasses the natural air-cleaning, heating, and humidifying functions that the nose was designed for.

Since the base of the nose is the top of the upper jaw, this changes the pressure of the air passing through the nose and mouth and hampers jaw growth. this phenomenonwas recordedlong ago through experiments in which hasty pinching of monkeys’ noses resulted in large deformities in their jaws.

Potential Solutions
The “cure” for misaligned jaw is actually very simple. First, we need to reduce children’s diets to much harder foods, and maybe even supplement them with special gummies. We also had to modify some of the current orthodontic techniques to emphasize forward movement of both jaws and avoid tooth extraction.

Dentists should encourage “dental practice,” a program that focuses on keeping the airway open through exercises aimed at correcting the “posture” of the jaw. We’ve learned that holding a person’s jaw and tongue when they’re not eating or talking is key to healthy jaw development.

A clearly defined and supported education program is needed at the community level. On an individual level, healthy jawbone development requires the long-term and careful cooperation of children (and parents) who have not yet benefited from jaw-friendly nutrition, all under the supervision of dentists familiar with dentistry.

While new studies and books are making waves about poor sleep, no study has explored the surprising link to poor jaw development.Jaws: The Story of a Hidden PandemicUncovering this largely unknown, growing, serious public health crisis.

Most people in today’s industrialized societies are unaware of the ubiquitous facial distortion, the prevalence of sleep apnea, the extent to which children wear braces, or other health epidemic symptoms that oral health can be attributed tohowMost people eat and shut up when they are resting.

People tend to accept the world they grew up in as a standard. But what is common is not necessarily “normal” or healthy. There is growing evidence that a significant proportion of the population can live better lives with oral and facial health and the many consequences of its deficiency.

If spreading knowledge about mouth and face health can become a civilization-wide priority, it could make a big dent in the rising epidemic of sleep apnea (and perhaps a smaller pit in a host of other nasty diseases, from heart problems to cancer). to mental decline). We hope that many children and their families can avoid the medical consequences of poor oral posture and the high repair costs altogether.

Dr Sandra Kahn joins me to talk about a silent epidemic affecting our population, narrow jaws. She discusses why this is such a huge problem, the habits we need to be teaching children in order to develop muscles for healthy jaws and teeth. She also shares why as adults we also need to be chewing and not just drinking smoothies or eating soft foods. Sandra explains her own approach ‘forwardontics’ and how it differs from the traditional approach to straightening teeth.

This channel is part of the International Association of Facial Growth Guidance. A not for-profit organisation which aims to raise awareness of alternative orthodontic methods and ideas, which too few people are informed of.

The main aim of the platform is to precipitate debate on why teeth are cooked. Most people are not aware that (in most cases) the dental profession has little or no idea why the teeth are crooked, or for that matter why children need major surgery. Clearly there are genetic issues, however the science is clear, the weight of quality research papers, in respected peer reviewed journals, show that our modern lifestyle is a more important factor and most importantly we can do something about this.

This is especially important as sleep apnoea, TMD, forward head posture and a most otolaryngology problems are implicated as other symptoms of the same underlying problem.
