It is a beautiful ancient ecosystem of more than 400,000 acres and is home to both the highest point in the United States and the largest tree in the world.

And it’s just a day’s drive from Las Vegas.

Sequoia National Park welcomes more than a million visitors each year, drawn by the park’s trails, rock climbing, mountain scenery, and of course the sequoias and tall giant sequoia trees that rise hundreds of feet into the air.

Some ancient giants in Sequoia National Park

For visitors to Las Vegas, this natural wonder is just 376 miles (or 605 km) from the Las Vegas Strip to the Sequoia National Park Visitor Center.

This equates to a six to seven hour drive (no stops). Therefore, a visit to Sequoia National Park will add a pleasant two or three-day side trip to your Las Vegas vacation rather than just a long day trip.

Most of the journey will take place on Interstate 15, which always seems to be busy.

The driveway from Las Vegas to Sequoia National Park can be split into three different sections, each about a two-hour drive.

In the first section, you’ll drive a long stretch of desert westbound on I-15 for 153 miles to Barstow, California.

At Barstow you will get off I-15 and take California Freeway 58 to Bakersfield.

This second leg from Barstow to Bakersfield is another 130 miles, or about a two-hour drive.

From Bakersfield, you’ll head north on Highway 65 through California farmland. Just east of Visalia, you’ll head east on Highway 198, which takes you to Sequoia National Park’s Foothill Visitor Center.

The second national park in the United States (the first was Yellowstone), Sequoia National Park was established in 1890 by a law signed by President Benjamin Harrison.

The park is perhaps best known for towering sequoia trees and sequoias, some of which predate the birth of Jesus.

The most notable of these is the General Sherman tree, the world’s largest tree at 275 feet tall and 36 feet in diameter. At the base of the tree, it measures an astonishing 102 feet in circumference.

The General Sherman tree is found in Giant Forrest, a 1,800-acre Sequoia forest that is home to five of the world’s 10 tallest trees.

In addition to these natural wonders, Sequoia National Park offers hundreds of hiking trails, from long backpacking tours to very short guided tours.

Also in the park is Mount Whitney at 14,505 feet, the highest point in the continental United States.

The park is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, but some roads are closed during the winter (more info below).

Park entry fees vary, but as of this writing, the park entry fee (we’re talking about one vehicle) is $30 per vehicle.

There is also a paid shuttle service that brings guests to the park from hotels in the neighboring towns of Visalia and Three Rivers.

Kings Canyon National Park

In fact, the entrance to Kings Canyon is only 50 miles to the north of Sequoia National Park.

While incredibly scenic, the Generals Highway, the main road connecting the two parks, is bumpy and winding and takes several hours, possibly longer, on busy summer holiday weekends.

So slow down and enjoy the ride. Please note that the road is also closed from January to March.

Many park visitors enter Sequoia National Park through its southern entrance near the town of Three Rivers at Ash Mountain at 1,700 ft (520 m) elevation. The lower elevations around Ash Mountain contain the only National Park Service-protected California Foothills ecosystem, consisting of blue oak woodlands, foothills chaparral, grasslands, yucca plants, and steep, mild river valleys. The region is also home to abundant wildlife: bobcats, foxes, ground squirrels, rattlesnakes, and mule deer are commonly seen in this area, and more rarely, reclusive mountain lions and the Pacific fisher are seen as well. The last California grizzly was killed in this park in 1922 (at Horse Corral Meadow). The California Black Oak is a key transition species between the chaparral and higher elevation conifer forest.

At higher elevations in the front country, between 5,500 and 9,000 feet (1,700 and 2,700 m) in elevation, the landscape becomes montane forest-dominated coniferous belt. Found here are Ponderosa, Jeffrey, sugar, and lodgepole pine trees, as well as abundant white and red fir. Found here too are the giant sequoia trees, the most massive living single-stem trees on earth. Between the trees, spring and summer snowmelts sometimes fan out to form lush, though delicate, meadows. In this region, visitors often see mule deer, Douglas squirrels, and American black bears, which sometimes break into unattended cars to eat food left by careless visitors. There are plans to reintroduce the bighorn sheep to this park.
