Multi-read content old mother hubbard nursery rhyme

Although there are several theories as to the historical origin of the character ‘Old Mother Hubbard’, this nursery rhyme was written and illustrated by Sarah Catherine Martin (circa 1804) – primarily to entertain her sister’s children.

The poem was first told in the home of her sister Judith Anne Marti, wife of the notorious politician John Pollexfen Bastard. The lyrics were actually inspired by an elderly housekeeper at her sister’s house who lived in a cottage on her estate after quitting her job.

When the illustrated book was first published in 1805, it was a huge success and the poem became one of the most popular rhymes of all time.

It is possible that the story is based on an earlier children’s poem “Alte Dame” which appeared in 1803 in a very different spelling.

The old mother Hubbard character is related to St Hubert, protector of hunters, mathematicians, optometrists and metalworkers, or more commonly to Cardinal Thomas Wolsey – like another Little Boy Blue rhyme – but without there’s no evidence linking any of these support theories.

Old Mother Hubbard lyrics.

Hubbard’s elderly mother
Arrived at the closet
To give the poor dog a bone:
When she got there
the closet is empty
And so the poor dog has none.

She went to the baker
To buy him some bread;
when she comes back
The dog is dead!

She went to the person in charge
To buy him a coffin;
when she comes back
The dog laughed.

She picked up a clean plate
to get him tripe;
when she comes back
He smokes a pipe.

She went to camp
To get him some beer;
when she comes back
The dog is sitting on the chair.

She went to the pub
For white and red wines;
when she comes back
The dog is upside down.

She went to the fruit store
To buy him some fruit;
when she comes back
He plays the flute.

She went to the tailor
To buy him a coat;
when she comes back
He rides a goat.

She went to the hat shop
To buy him a hat;
when she comes back
He feeds the cat.

She went to the hairdresser
Buy him a wig
when she comes back
He’s doing a jig.

She went to the cafe
To buy him shoes;
when she comes back
He reads the news.

She went to a seamstress
To buy him linen;
when she comes back
The dog turned around.

She went to the enemy’s house
To buy him some faucets;
when she comes back
He wore his own clothes.

The lady curtsied
The dog bows;
Our Lady said: Your servant;
The dog said: Wow.

This great dog
Lady Hubbard’s Joy,
He can read, he can dance
He can sing, he can write;
She gave him rich people
whenever he feeds
And build this monument
when he was dead

Lyrics:

Old Mother Hubbard

Went to her cupboard

To give her poor dog a bone.

But when she got there,

The cupboard was bare.

And so the poor dog had none,

And so the poor dog had none.

She went to the baker’s

To buy him some bread.

But when she came back

She thought he was dead.

She went to the joiner’s

To buy him a coffin.

But when she came back,

The sly dog was laughing,

The sly dog was laughing.

She went to the barber’s

To buy him a wig.

But when she came back,

He was dancing a jig.

She went to the fruiter’s

To buy him some fruit.

But when she came back,

He was playing the flute,

He was playing the flute.

She went to the hosier’s

To buy him some hose.

But when she came back,

He was dressed in his clothes.

The dame made a curtsy,

The dog made a bow.

The dame said, “Your servant,”

The dog said bow wow,

The dog said bow wow.
