A short human interest film about the most recent volcanic eruption in Iceland by Donal Boyd and Frank Nieuwenhuis.

For the first time ever in the history of our planet, thousands of people have been able to experience such an intense force of nature together.

As most people focused on the eruption itself, this short film turns the camera around on the people and explores what it really means to connect with nature through a collective experience.

Donal Boyd is a wildlife conservationist and fine art portrait photographer and filmmaker with the mission to promote “Conservation of Nature Through Visual Advocacy”.

Frank Nieuwenhuis is a director and filmmaker based in Iceland with the mission to capture and depict the essence of his subjects and their personal stories through cinematic and highly aesthetic visuals.

DISCLAIMERS: (1) A volcanic eruption is quite obviously an unpredictable and immensely dangerous force of nature. In general viewing, such a spectacle is prohibited by poisonous gas, risk of exposure to scorching hot lava, and other various hazards. The production of this film involved careful assessment of all such various conditions that would minimize the risks involved. This included, but is not limited to, following official updates and advice from the Icelandic Meteorological Office, Icelandic Search and Rescue Team, and advisors on the ground at the eruption site. Utilization of technical equipment, including gas masks, and gas detectors to monitor poisonous gases. And direct contact with volcanologists for up-to-date predictions on volcanic activity and risks. Inherently, there is always a certain degree of uncertainty when visiting an active volcano, but because of the nature of this particular eruption, the risks were minimal. Seeing as the primary caldera was situated in a depression, surrounded by mountains, which made viewing safe. This allowed literally thousands of people to visit the volcano early on. (2) As conditions at the eruption site have changed, this might prohibit the ease of viewing. If you do decide to visit the eruption site in the future yourself, we advise you to follow updates and advice on how to prepare yourself published through ruv.is and vedur.is.
