Taylor - Crow and Pitcher 0095

You must know a crow
Amused as she ate dinner
For some drinks, thirsty and hot;
But puddle or puddle, her fever was cooling.
There are none within twenty miles

“A suggestion,” said the crow, “I think I’ll drink now,
And I’ll be there in a minute; “
But unfortunately! for the bird her potion is still on ice,
Because it is rare that there is a full cup in it.

“It’s provocative! I choose! “She speaks; “But look!
Certainly I have thought of a project to achieve this;
With the stones of my reckoning I will fill the deep pot;
Then the water will rise until I’m thirsty will deliver. ”
– She did it and got it too.

Is that second leg as dumb as a lot of people
Although she dies from the drink, she gets nothing;
For the good things that are often achieved in life,

Crow and PitcherErnst Griset (1874)

Townsend Version

Townsend version

A thirsty crow, seeing a pitcher and hoping to find water, flew there with amusement. When he touched it, he found sadly that it contained so little water that he could not get it. He tried everything to reach the water, but all his efforts were in vain. He ends up collecting as many rocks as he can and dropping them one by one into the pitcher with his beak until the water is within his reach, thus saving his life.

USE

Many things that cannot be done by force or vulgar boldness can be accomplished by new and untried means. A courageous and penetrating man who does not immediately despair in the face of one difficulty or another; but if he cannot succeed in one way, use his intelligence and ingenuity in another; and in order to avoid or overcome an obstacle, do not be afraid to leave the path of your ancestors. Since our happiness, apart from the regulation of the mind, depends entirely on having and enjoying the comforts of life, why should we doubt the methods of attaining them? Or pay respect to antiquity based on that score? If most ages have not produced new innovations of their own accord, we should want to own the thousands of arts, or at least many degrees of perfection in all the arts we are currently working on. The invention of anything more beneficial to the mind or body than before should be readily accepted, and the person who projects it will be awarded a proper incentive. For example, the use of the compass, from which humanity derives many advantages and benefits not known in earlier times. If we follow in the footsteps of those who have gone before us in the ancient course of life, how are we different from the horses in a team, linked by chains or harnesses, moving at a heavy, dull pace to the tune? of their leader’s bells? But the man who enriched the current knowledge base with a number of new and useful innovations, like a cheerful explorer at sea, discovered unknown land and improved an additional trade in his own country.

USE.

“What is discovered is for show only,
Nothing is known that remains unknown. “

The man who enriches the current body of knowledge with a number of new and useful innovations honors himself and is always rewarded by the public: for, like a cheerful explorer at sea, he discovers that it is an unknown land and imports another treasure for his land.

Bewick-0098-Crow-and-Pitcher-BottomIs this a dog setting an example for humanity by studying as recommended in the parable above? Or is it a satire about soft dogs reflecting the differences between the species given in the following fable [The Partridge and the Rooster]? Or just an exaggerated example of animal intelligence?. – Bewick Association

Crow and Pitcher

How did the cunning old crow get his drink
When the jug is almost empty, just think!
Don’t say he spilled it!
He fills it with pebbles,
Until the water rose to the edge.

Use your intelligence.
