A peaceful death

In the foreword to the book, the 14th Dalai Lama says:

As a Buddhist, I see death as a normal process, a fact that I accept will come as long as I am on this earth. Since I knew I couldn’t get rid of it, I saw no reason to worry about it. I tend to see death more as changing your clothes when they are old and worn out, rather than some kind of final ending. However, death is unpredictable: we don’t know when or how it will happen. So it only makes sense to take some precautions before it actually happens. Of course, most of us want to die a peaceful death, but of course we cannot hope to die peacefully when our lives are filled with violence or when our thoughts are provoked by emotions like anger, attachment, or fear. So if we want to die well, we must learn to live well: in order to die peacefully, we must cultivate peace in our soul and in our way of life.

Here are some key lessons from this comprehensive, practical, and insightful guide to life.

1. Slipping out of the noose of self-fearing habits

The hard knocks of life can make us rigid, reserved, and tense people. One only has to watch grey-faced, black-clad commuters to see that. I attended a retreat with another Dozghen master, Namkhai Norbu, a few years ago and he said the biggest problem with westerners is that we don’t know how to do it.Relax. Even when we think or feel that we are relaxing, we often donot. In fact, we all have different levels of relaxation, and it can take years of practice to learn the true art of relaxation. This wonderful teaching (explained in the excerpt below) gives us a clear picture and guidance on how to achieve that state of pure relaxation, like a cat sleeping on its back; At the top, your feet are floating in the air, the moment of happiness is rising.

Above all, be as comfortable, natural and spacious as possible. Gently break free from the shackles of habitual worry, let go of all grips and release yourself into your true nature. Think of your emotional self and your ordinary thoughts as a block of ice or a stick of butter left out in the sun. If you feel stiff and cold, allow that aggression to dissipate in the sunlight of your meditation. Allow peace to wash over you and allow yourself to focus your distracted mind on the mindfulness of calming and awakening within you awareness and insight into the clear view. 2. Know yourself

Much of Buddhism emphasizes discovering the timeless, that is, what lies beneath the “false” self, and how to let go of anything that covers us and no longer lets us see what was real and was there. Being with yourself in these quiet moments is essential for spiritual awareness and healing.

Without the familiar props, we have to confront ourselves, someone we don’t know, a terrible stranger we’ve been living with all along but never really wanted to meet. So don’t we try to fill every moment with noise and activity, be it boring or insignificant, to make sure we’re never left alone with this stranger? – Sogyal Rinpoche

Learn to see all of yourself

Being at peace with ourselves, in stillness, is the way we really get to know ourselves.

These ancient teachings continue to urge us to see the deep simplicity and lightness of spirituality. It is something deeply natural that is part of everyday life.

3. Spiritual truth is common sense

Spiritual truth is not elaborate and esoteric, it is in fact profound common sense. When you realize the nature of mind, the layers of chaos will peel off. One doesn’t really “become” a Buddha, one just slowly puts an end to the delusion. And becoming a Buddha is not becoming an all-powerful spiritual superman, but ultimately becoming a real human being. – Sogyal Rinpoche

My teachers in India used to say that spirituality is moving awaynow available, Yes, reallylife. This is a mental mess free life; the continuous dissection of life so that, for example, when we eat a mango, we fully taste and experience that mango. We do not intend to be unhappy, confused, or stuck in mental debris. Our birthright is peace and contentment. And that applies to all of us, not just a few “chosen ones” who have become enlightened. Each of us can attain a state of conscious awareness.

Stress and misery is not our natural state

We all deserve to be free from suffering and mental confusion.

4. Meditation does not involve the mind

5. Nothing ever works the way you want it to

I have a daily physical reminder of the wisdom of this next quote from the book. Each of my four children came unexpectedly. Despite the best of plans and precautions, I have four beautiful creatures that have transformed my life in incredible ways, and I have certainly been powerless to stop the power of the universe that created them.

Planning for the future is like fishing in a dry stream; Never achieve the desired results, so abandon all plans and ambitions. If you have something to think about – make it your uncertain hour of death. – Sogyal Rinpoche

Freedom

It is a great freedom to let go of what you cannot control.

6. Accept impermanence and humility

What is born will die, what has been accumulated will be scattered, what has been accumulated will be exhausted, what has been built will fall, and what was high will be brought down. – Sogyal Rinpoche

It can be humbling to think that one day we will all die and that there is nothing, not a single thing we can do to prevent it. We are utterly helpless and helpless in the face of this total certainty. In fact, death is something we can be sure of in life.

7. Optical illusion of separation

Man is a part of a whole that we call “the universe”, a part limited in time and space. This illusion is a kind of prison for us, confining us to our personal and emotional desires for the few people closest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by opening our circle of compassion to include all living beings and all of nature within. – Sogyal Rinpoche

Learning to accept ourselves as part of a whole gives us a greater capacity for compassion.
