Lawrence of Arabia is not only one of the famous war films, but also an indispensable cinematic piece. The 1962 film won numerous Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director. It is also ranked fifth on the American Film Institute’s “100 years… 100 movies” list. It was selected for preservation in the National Film Registry at the Library of Congress in 1991. The film was made with an Anglo-American co-production.

“Lawrence of Arabia” is an epic historical war film lasting over 220 minutes. The story of the movie takes place during World War I and T.E. Lawrence, British lieutenant. The film is about Lawrence being sent to Arabia to seek help from Prince Faisal so that he can aid the British in their war against the Turks.

Lawrence of Arabia Filming Location

“Lawrence of Arabia” is considered a filmmaking marvel for several reasons. One is the visual style of the film, which has inspired many famous filmmakers.Steven Spielberg,George Lucas,Martin ScorseseAnd many others. The movie manages to capture its spooky settings quite nicely. Some of its scenes and locations have become quite iconic along with the filming locations used. It is therefore natural for viewers to wonder where the movie was filmed.

Spain

Much of Lawrence of Arabia was filmed in Spain. Most of the shooting inside was done in Spain. However, many other places in Spain, especially Sevilla, have been transformed into Middle Eastern regions. For example, the Jordanian city of Aqaba in the movie was actually shot in a specially built environment. This embankment was built on Playa del Algarrobico, a beach in Southern Spain. The film was carefully constructed to reflect the real city of Aqaba. Filming was not done in the actual city of Aqaba due to financial reasons and a disease outbreak between the cast and crew prior to filming.

On the other hand, the train attack scene was shot on the Genoese coast in Almeria. In Seville, the Parque de Maria Luisa is a notable attraction. Plaza de America and Real Alcazar de Sevilla were featured in different scenes set in Jerusalem, and El Casino was used to depict Damascus city hall.

56 years ago today (1962) the movie finished Lawrence of Arabia. Scenes were shot at Plaza de España, Casa de Pilatos, Plaza de America in Maria Luisa Park, and the Alcazar.

Later, the Palacia Espanol in the Plaza de Espana, in the Parque de Maria Luisa, was also used as an important filming location. It is used to describe scenes set in Cairo. The Alfonso XIII Hotel was also used to shoot the scenes in Cairo. The scene where Lawrence and Allenby meet was filmed at the Casa de Pilatos. Filming also took place on Avenida de Isabel la Catolica.

It was also shot in the deserts of Tabernas and Cabo de Gata in Spain.

The Tabernas Desert (Spain) is the driest place in Europe. Many Westerners were shot there (probably Lawrence of Arabia or Game of Thrones), and it’s a haven for microbial ecologists. pic.twitter.com/SwUIirFVgd

Jordan

After Spain, Jordan was used as the center of attraction for ‘Lawrence of Arabia’. One of the film’s most memorable locations is Wadi Rum: an iconic location since its debut, as described in the film. Jebel Tubeiq and Maan are also used for shooting. Sharif Ali’s entrance scene was filmed in Jafr.

Other locations

Jordan and Spain aren’t the only countries that attract Lawrence of Arabia. Some scenes were also shot in England. For example, the Shepperton studio in Surrey was used to shoot several scenes. Church of St. Paul was used to shoot the funeral scene. However, part of the scene (indoor) was shot in a studio in Spain. Chobham Common in Surrey was the scene where Lawrence fell off his motorcycle. The sand dunes at Merthyr Mawr were also used for filming.

Filming also took place in Morocco, particularly in Ait Benhaddou and the southern Ouarzazate desert. Finally, some scenes were also shot in the United States. Royal Sands in California was used to shoot several desert scenes.
