KNOXVILLE, TN. (WATE) — It has been 14 years since 21-year-old Channon Christian and 23-year-old Chris Newsom were brutally murdered. In the years since, her families have fought for justice while honoring her memory.

The randomness of the crimes terrified the community and victims’ families were forced to relive the nightmare of having to appear in court hundreds of times to seek justice – which also resulted in a string of laws that put 5 people in jail had to do their crimes.

Lemaricus Davidson, the suspected mastermind behind the carjacking, kidnapping, rape and murder, has been sentenced to death. Letalvis Cobbins lives life without amnesty.

George Thomas is serving two consecutive lifetime terms. Eric Boyd was sentenced to two life terms plus 90 years.

Late last year, Vanessa Coleman, considered a trailblazer and sentenced to 35 years, was denied pardon.

Channon Christian, 21 years old, and her boyfriendChris Newsom, 23 years oldShe did not go to a friend’s party on January 6, 2007 and never returned home to her parents. They were last seen at the Washington Ridge Apartments. The next day, a train attendant reported a body near the railroad tracks and 9th Avenue in East Knoxville. It was revealed the next day that the bound and burned body was that of Chris Newsom, and it was later revealed that he had been raped, beaten and shot. Channon’s abandoned vehicle was found nearby.

On January 9, 2007, fingerprints on the car led to a house at 2316 Chipman St. A body was found but not immediately identified. Friends and family feared the worst, and investigators later confirmed that Channon Christian was dead. She was found in a rubbish bin – beaten, raped and had bleach poured down her throat. The coroner determined that she had suffocated in a trash can.

Since the discovery of their bodies, the subsequent manhunt, arrests and subsequent convictions of those responsible for the young couple’s deaths, the tragedy has continued. Convicts who remain behind bars continue to exercise their legal rights during the appeals process and court hearings.
