today: How Many Bodies Are Buried In Hoover Dam?

Deaths at Hoover Dam

Built during the Great Depression between 1931 and 1936, the Hoover Dam—then known as Boulder Dam—was one of the largest construction projects of its time. The dam, a massive concrete dome over 725 feet high and 1,244 feet tall, cost $49 million to complete and has caused the deaths of more than 100 people.

reality

The high death toll is the source of many stories of workers buried/dismembered at Hoover Dam. The mortality rate was unusually high, even for a project of this magnitude, and so it fueled the collective American imagination — that the workers’ bodies would simply be dumped into the concrete mix and never be seen again.

The Hoover Dam is made up of almost 4.5 million cubic yards of concrete and is divided into sections containing thousands of cubic yards of concrete. Each slab must harden before the next is poured. It often takes hours between casting and setting before a part is finished. Gives an unsafe worker plenty of time to get out of the situation permanently narrowing the Colorado River.

While that’s not convincing enough, engineers will do their best to prevent a body – dead or alive – from being placed in the dam’s concrete. The human body is made of perishable organic material, unlike rebar commonly used in large concrete projects. This decomposing material causes quite a problem for a large concrete block. A decomposing body will eventually form an air pocket in the concrete, reducing the stability of the block over time. The weight of the surrounding concrete combined with the restricted flow forces can ultimately compromise the structural integrity of the dam.

Another possible explanation for the urban legend stems from another major dam project being built around the same time: Montana’s Fort Peck Dam. Until the world’s largest backfill dam—unlike Hoover’s concrete—had buried eight workers alive. On September 22, 1936, part of the dam ruptured and slid into man-made Fort Peck Lake. Of the eight workers, only two have so far been recovered after the crash, and although Fort Peck, Montana is not far from the Nevada-Arizona border, it’s easy to see how confused the 1936 crash site could be.

However, one thing is certain: there is no dam where any bodies are buried in Hoover Dam.
