Multi-read content how to make a negro a christian

by Charles Colcock JonesThe Black People’s Guide to Religion in the United StatesIt was a long-standing incentive that encouraged white ministers and slaveholders to attend to the spiritual needs of freed slaves and blacks. The book is divided into four parts. The first part is a historical outline of slavery in the Colonies and the United States, focusing on missionary and religious efforts towards African slaves. This account spans from 1620 to 1842 and extends every year after 1792. Jones ends this first chapter with a summary of each denomination and state.

The second chapter deals with the “Moral and Religious Status” of slaves and free blacks and attributes their plight to a lack of virtue. Jones especially drew attention to their poverty and lack of education. He describes their ignorance of Christianity, their general lack of identity, and their pervasive immorality, and states that they ultimately depend entirely on white men to overcome these limitations. Following this explanation, Jones goes on to explain in chapter three the role of the Catholic church in rectifying these problems. He claims that religious education for the African population is a necessity that no Christian can ignore, then goes on to refute a series of arguments and defies this claim. He also listed some of the benefits of religious education.

The final section of the book proposed various strategies for implementing religious education programs for slaves, made recommendations for Sabbath services and weekday castle meetings. Jones said the Christian gospel should be presented in an intelligible way to untrained slaves and, when possible, instilled in childhood. The guiding principle he described for dealing with the situation of slavery was to deal only with spirituality, not with secular, political, or civic concerns. Jones ended his speech with heartfelt words of encouragement to gurus, ministers, and the church in general, urging them all to pay more attention to the religious education of the African-American segment.

“What are the benefits of giving Christianity to enslaved Africans?”

“It is surprising that there is any objection; Our obligation to provide religious education to blacks, and the benefits that result, must be clear to all. We think its benefits are immeasurable and one of them is more submissive among Negroes.(page 52). ”

In 1832, a sermon was given in the south under the title A Negro’s Religious Guide. By 1906, the number of followers of the Negro church had increased by 57.6 percent. In other words, enslaved Africans are being converted into black Christians at an alarming rate.

NEGRO CHRISTIAN HOWTO reprint the entire lesson, you can read it yourself and add critical comments. Read the definitive plans formulated by the Reverend Charles Colcock Jones to ‘nerve’ us, the enslaved Afrikaner population, and pay attention to what happens on Sundays in most of the Afrikaner community / Black leather. Here are some selected quotes from the so-called ‘Negro Apostles’.

“And with our fields and the times and people of our servants who are completely under our control, we can self-adjust how and how often we follow our instructions, at their sole discretion and for the duration of these instructions.
On time and with very little downtime as we can arrange mornings and evenings for our own fire brigade. Our children can become teachers to some extent by reading simple passages to them.
Bible or simple Legends and the like. “page 67

Joseph Jones and Charles Colcock Jones Jr. are Princeton students from Georgia who served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War.

“Is the authority of the masters weakened by such instructions? No, it will be developed. And we believe that only in this way can their strength be strengthened and supported; because the obligation of obedience is not felt and fulfilled to the extent we desire, unless we touch it on religious principles. ”page 72

“To promote guilt, you must accuse Blacks of certain sins on which they are so dependent, and subject them to enormous punishments and impending worldly consequences.”page 55

“The subject of preaching to blacks should be predominantly concerned with parables, historical events, miracles, the lives of holy and profane people as in the Bible, and the great and wonderful works of God: all illustrated.
on doctrine and practice. It takes a lot of reasoning with drawings. And since most of them do not read, they should read and explain God’s holy word to them constantly and as much as possible. “page 83

“We began to wonder if there were any people in world history who were fully Christianized without their own agents to spread the gospel among themselves. I
I don’t know about such people. “page 86

“Let [slave owners] invest some capital in the minds and hearts of their slaves, and it will prove to all concerned an investment that pays off in time and money. time and POSITIVE”page 102

Holidays can be joyful times of celebration and fellowship. But sometimes we end up participating in holidays that we have no practical or spiritual connection to. And in the U.S., some holidays have been commercialized and divorced from their historical roots. Laiya, Aja, and Jill shout out some Black holidays (like Juneteenth) as well as some of the traditions they’ve created and observe in their own homes.
