Major League Baseball, once separate, was recently moved to include black baseball’s statistics and records of black players as part of its official history.

Brooklyn Dodgers first junior Jackie Robinson, then 28, became the first black player in the professional league several decades before the league’s “long-overdue recognition” in 2020. Before the eyes of the world, Robinson wore the number 42 jersey and performed on the Ebbets in April. 15, 1947 broke the color barrier and paved the way for other black players into the big leagues.
Robinson said in an October 1972 interview that this was his last day before he died. “I think the role of black people in baseball today is incredibly important and has influenced baseball, and the fact that they’re doing so much in the game today keeps baseball at the forefront.”
Born on January 31, 1919, Robinson was inspired by his brother Mack, an Olympic medalist. In 1935, Robinson played baseball while attending John Muir High School in Pasadena, California. He played all four during his college years.

While playing for the Kansas City Monarchs of the Negro Leagues, he caught the attention of Brooklyn Dodger manager Rickey. Rickey is determined to integrate into Major League Baseball. Robinson joined the Montreal Royals, the smaller division of the Dodgers, in 1946. His talent in his late teens earned him a spot in the major leagues and marked the beginning of a 10-year career with the Brooklyn Dodgers. This important milestone was not easy. Robinson receives hate mail, death threats, and an unsuccessful petition from some of his teammates to have him removed from the prom box.
Despite immense odds, Robinson still had one of the most notable careers in major league history. In his first season in Brooklyn, he won Rookie of the Year, becoming the first black player to be named National League MVP and a six-time All-Star. Shortly before retiring, Robinson marked his baseball career with a 1956 World Series win over Dodger’s opponents, the New York Yankees. In 1962 he was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Robinson broke through the fence without stopping in the field. In 1957, he began working with the NAACP, ran the multimillion-dollar Freedom Fund Drive, and joined the coffee company Chock full o’Nuts as vice president of human resources, where he became chief operating officer and the first black executive at a major American corporation.
Jackie died of a heart attack at his home in Connecticut. He was 53 years old. His wife Rachel established the Jackie Robinson Foundation in his honor. At 99, Rachel continues to expand Jackie’s story. On April 15, 1997, in the first game in history against a player in any sport, Robinson’s jersey number was removed from all Major League Baseball. The only time players, coaches and managers wore Robinson’s 42 attire was on the anniversary he broke the color barrier. For the 75th anniversary, all uniformed MLB employees will wear the #42 jersey, the traditional Dodger blue, regardless of their team colors for Robinson. As part of America250’s core mission, we will celebrate American stories like Robinson’s.
