rest of the dayis told in a first-person perspective by an English butler named Stevens. In July 1956, Stevens decided to take a six-day road trip to the west of England – an area west of Darlington Hall, the house where Stevens resided and had served as butler in ’35. Although the house was formerly owned by the late Lord Darlington, in 1956 it belonged to Mr. Farraday, an American gentleman. Stevens likes Mr. Stevens calls this casual conversational skill “banter”; Several times throughout the novel, Stevens expresses his desire to improve his small talk skills so that he can better please his current employer.
The purpose of Stevens’ trip was to visit Miss Kenton, the former housekeeper of Darlington Hall, who had left to get married twenty years earlier. Stevens received a letter from Ms Kenton and believes her letter indicates her marriage is failing and she may wish to return to her position as housekeeper. Since the end of World War II it has been difficult to find enough staff to garrison large mansions such as Darlington Hall.
Much of the story consists of Stevens’ reminiscences of his work as a housekeeper during and just after World War II. He describes the large, lavish dinner parties and the distinguished, elegant personalities who dined and stayed at Darlington Hall at the time. It is gradually becoming apparent – mostly through the other characters’ interactions with Stevens, not his own admission – that Lord Darlington was sympathetic to Nazi Germany due to his misperceived impression of the German agenda before World War II. Darlington arranged and even hosted dinner parties between German and British heads of state to help both sides reach a peaceful settlement. Stevens always insisted that Lord Darlington was the perfect gentleman and it was a shame that his reputation was tarnished simply because he misunderstood the Nazis’ true intent.
During the trip, Stevens also shared the stories of his contemporaries – the housekeepers in other homes with whom he was friends. However, Stevens’ most notable relationship to date has been his long working relationship with Miss Kenton. Though Stevens never said it outright, he appeared to harbor romantic feelings for Ms. Kenton. Despite the fact that the two often argue over various household chores while working together, these disagreements are childish in nature and mostly a testament to their shared concern. At the end of the novel, Mrs. Kenton Stevens admits that her life would probably be better if she married him. After hearing those words, Stevens was extremely upset. However, he did not tell Mrs Kenton – who was married and went by the name Mrs Benn – how he felt. Stevens and Miss Kenton are a part, Stevens returns to Darlington Hall, his only new determination to perfect the art of wit to please his new owner.
As Salman Rushdie puts it, The Remains of the Day is “a story that is both beautiful and brutal”. It is first and foremost a story of regret: Stevens gave his life’s absolute trust and devotion to a man who had made a fatal mistake. Throughout his professional engagements, Stevens failed to seek the only woman with whom he could have a fulfilling and loving relationship. The mask of his original form cuts him off from intimacy, friendship and understanding.
