Pennsylvania Zones – Learn about plant hardiness

One of the first things any new gardener should do is find out where they live on the Pennsylvania USDA plant hardiness map. Click on the map above to zoom in and find your crop problem area.

Plant hardiness, as defined by the USDA, refers to a particular species’ resilience to withstanding extremely low average winter temperatures. Winter temperature data for the 2012 map was collected over a 30-year period from thousands of weather stations across the country. This data, along with other factors such as elevation and proximity to a major body of water, is used to establish plant hardiness zones for all regions of the country.

The districts of Pennsylvania include 5a, 5b, 6a, 6b, 7a and a very small portion of 7b. If you can’t find your location on the map above, you can visit the USDA page where you can enter your zip code to see exactly what area you are in.

The Pennsylvania Botanical Map is an extremely useful resource and a good starting point for plant selection. Muchlocal nurserybrings plants that are suitable for your particular growing area. Always follow planting and care instructions carefully for best results.

Hardiness zones are helpful, but for beginner gardeners, they can often confuse you more than they clarify. They’re based on the average annual minimum temperature, which gives you SOME info but not ALL the info you need to know what to plant and when to plant it in your garden.
