Derived from an ancient Greek myth and famous Homeric epic, the story forms the origin of the well-known Trojan war and involves beauty, jealousy, and most of all, love.

Also known as the ‘Judgement of Paris’, the myth follows Paris’ journey from his home in Troy, to Mount Ida in Crete, where he judges the most extraordinary of contests. He eventually ventures to Sparta, where he chooses the forbidden love of the most beautiful woman in the world, Helen of Troy. The result was the Trojan war, with Helen forever becoming known as ‘the face that launched a thousand ships’.

When observing the moral of the story, the Golden Apple of Discord, or the Judgement of Paris, may seem to be about beauty. However, on closer inspection, listeners may notice that it is instead how mankind places value on the choices they are given.

The Trojan War began after Paris, a Prince of Troy, abducted Helen, the Queen of Sparta, who was known for her beauty. Helen of Troy was later called “the face that launched a thousand ships.”

But what prompted Helen to fall in love with Paris? To answer this question, we must look back to the wedding of the parents of Achilles, an event to which all of the gods were invited, with the exception of Eris, the goddess of discord. In order to take revenge, Eris left a golden apple among the wedding gifts with the inscription, “To the fairest.” Hera, Aphrodite, and Athena all claimed the apple and Zeus referred the three of them to Paris, a mortal man who was known as a judge of beauty.

Each goddess offered Paris a bribe in order to influence his decision. Hera offered Paris a great kingdom, while Athena offered him wisdom. Aphrodite, however, knew what Paris truly wanted. She offered him the love of the most beautiful woman in the world.

Paris chose Aphrodite, who gave him the love of the most beautiful woman in the world, but there was a catch. Helen was married to a king. This is the incident that started the Trojan War.
