Multi-read content wild: from lost to found on the pacific crest trail
I have to be completely honest here. I didn’t choose this book because of the other reviews huhMy friends have told me about it, either because Oprah seemed to love it and because she interviewed author Cheryl Strayed.
I chose this book because of the Pacific Crest Trail. PCT holds a special, almost mythical place in my heart – as well as in the hearts of many outdoor guys. It’s an inspiring idea. Stepping onto the trail at the California-Mexico border and walking the 2,650 miles to the Washington-Canada border just gives us an urge to hike.
It’s an idea that attracts a lot of people to get involved. Some plan this trip half their lives. Some, like Cheryl, “get ready” and leave within months. All of these hikers do so for good reasons. Cheryl seems alternately trying to avoid who she is and trying to figure out who she might be.
Along the way you can meet new people, encounter bears and mountain lions, see stars without city lights blocking them, burn in the desert and freeze to death in the mountains, but you can’t hide from yourself for too long. Even the simple act of putting one foot in front of the other will eventually bring YOU to the surface and make you look back at yourself.
Cheryl’s story is perhaps somewhat typical of those following the trail. She thinks she is prepared and has everything she needs, but finds that in many ways she has too much for nothing – an overwhelming package that makes each step difficult and uninformative. In a way, however, she got exactly what she asked for.
She has her own powers; Proof that she actually continued the first leg of her journey, carrying an animal that was incredibly heavy and tearing holes in its skin, walking one foot in front of the other and constantly on the lookout for bears and snakes.
This is a brutally honest story. Cheryl didn’t throw any punches. Your life is a mess. But here’s a story about how we can heal and how we can face the things that haunt us, the things that scare us, and how with strength we can make the best of them.
This is not a fancy book, but it is one that will make you sit down and pay attention. It’s a book to read whether you’re hiking the PCT or any of the other National Scenic Trails, or just want to rediscover yourself.
If you enjoyed this book, look for other books by empowered women, including Arlene Blum’s Annapurna: A Woman’s Place and Rita Gelman’s Tales of a Female Nomad. Both are well written and inspirational to read. And if the Pacific Crest Trail captures your imagination, visit the trail website athttp://www.fs.usda.gov/pct. Here you will find lots of information and links to 29 other National Landmarks or Historic Trails. If you’ve ever hiked PCT, say hello to a section above California’s Warner Valley, where the trail winds up a flat ridge. I built this with my Camp Fire Girls team over 40 years ago.
