“And almost all things are cleansed by blood according to the law; and there is no remission without bloodshed. “(Hebrews 9:22)

Shedding blood has long been considered an appropriate payment to appease the gods, bring justice, or avenge an wronged party. God is no different: His covenant is sanctioned by blood, and blood must be shed to atone for our sins against Him. While this is a somewhat frightening thought, shedding blood is still an essential element of the salvation we can freely receive from Him.

#1 Downfall and Desecration

When God brought Adam and Eve out of the garden of Eden, he made garments for them from the skin of an animal (Genesis 3:21). Implicit in this judgment is a blood sacrifice: no one of God’s creatures has ever experienced physical death. Death was necessary to cover the sins of Adam and Eve, a poignant picture of the fact that we cannot stand before God based on our own worth alone.

As humanity moves away from God, blood becomes an even more important symbol. When God punished Cian for killing Abel, God said that Abel’s innocent blood cried out to him from the ground (Genesis 4:10). And when God allowed us to eat meat after the Flood, he clearly forbade us to eat blood, for that is the source of life; it is also the death penalty in cases of murder (Genesis 9:4-5).

#2 Covenant and Consecration

When God rescued the Israelites from Egypt and separated them among his chosen peoples (Deuteronomy 14:2), God confirmed his covenant and blessed the living, the products of priesthood worship, by shedding blood. The books of Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy refer to a series of animal sacrifices instituted by God to serve a purpose connected with the cleansing of sins.

Initially, blood was used to ritually “purify” items that would be used for later sacrifices; this included the altar, its utensils, the ark of the covenant, other items for the dwelling, the priest’s clothing, and even the high priest himself (Hebrews 9:21). Next, and most importantly, the daily, monthly, and annual sacrifices detailed in these books were commanded to atone for man’s sins. It will be given to them for willful crimes against God and even for unintentional sins; encompassed society as a whole and individually.

#3 Substitution and Sanctification

But the slaughter of sheep, rams, and bulls was not enough to completely atone for man’s sins before God. Such sacrifices are not only temporary solutions, but people have come back to their sins again and again. A perfect, complete sacrifice is required to atone for the underlying causes of our sinful nature.

God’s Son, Jesus Christ, was sent into the world as a sacrifice for us. He took on our sinful human nature to become the only human capable of living a sinless life (2 Corinthians 5:21). He told his disciples that his blood would be shed for the forgiveness of sins (Matthew 26:27-28). The consistent teaching of the gospel is that His death on the cross is an atonement for our sins and that this sacrifice is sufficient to cover all our sins (Ephesians 6:5). number 1:7, 1 John 1:7) .

#4 Relationship and Restoration

This is the missing piece that we can never provide to save ourselves. At the heart of the gospel is a disconnected relationship with God. We cannot stand before Him in our sins, and despite His love, He cannot forgive us without some kind of atonement being made on our behalf. The blood of Jesus covers our sins and allows us to return to a perfect, restored relationship with God (Ephesians 2:13). This new covenant made through Jesus Christ is what the Hebrews writer was talking about (Hebrews 9:15). Just as the first covenant with Israel was made in blood (Hebrews 9:19-20), this new covenant must be confirmed by blood.

And the beauty of the Gospel is that His sacrifice is permanent and sufficient for all eternity. The priests offered annual sacrifices to continually bless the altar and purify the environment, but this was never a perfect and permanent sacrifice (Hebrews 9:25). They can cover their sins, but only Jesus can cover them (Hebrews 9:26).

inference

Jesus was the one who selflessly defended us before the Father to judge for us when we sinned (1 John 2:1-2). Whenever we stand before the Father, Jesus points to the cross and announces that our debt of sin to Him has been paid (Colossians 2:14, 1 Peter 1:18-19).

This is the Hebrew meaning of “forgiveness of sins.” The demands of divine justice are met, our sins can be forgiven, and we can return to a perfect relationship with the Father through the shed blood of the Son.
