Multi-read content blizzard in new york city

Written by Ben Cosgrove

There’s something about blizzards that most of us enjoy. Memories of happy, unhappy things from “Snowy Days” school! Certainly, the collective excitement plays a role, and whether it’s a big metropolis or a remote small town, the prospect of a snowstorm, along with some fear, great expectations, can induce thrills.

There are certainly concerns about our families, our neighbors, our strength and warmth, our ability to go outside and move about in the snow and its aftermath, but there is also oneexcitement.

In December 1947, a massive historic storm dumped record amounts of snow across the northeastern United States. In New York City, where it snowed quietly and steadily for hours, several LIFE photographers stepped out of the magazine’s offices, grabbed cameras, and captured the scene. Here we remember the great snowstorm of 1947 with some photos that ran in LIFE magazine and many more that were never published in the magazine.

When LIFE made it available to readers on January 5, 1948, the output read:

“At 3:20 a.m. it started snowing in New York City. When most New Yorkers go to work, the ceiling is 3 inches deep. But the city that once ignored all natural phenomena and was guaranteed “occasional rain” by a weather forecast has gone on to business. But the days of clinging to that characteristically blasphemous attitude are over. The air was filled with snowflakes so big and thick they were almost invisible on the street. They fell continuously all morning, afternoon and into the night.
Long after dark, the New York Times’ lighted bulletin board broadcast an announcement to small groups of people gathered in Times Square that snow would fall, totaling a staggering 25.8 inches in less than 24 hours, which surpassed the city’s historic blizzard record of 1880. A faint, muffled cry of victory rang out from the victims. ”
