GPA and MCAT scores. These are the two main things people think about when they start thinking about datingMedical school app.

And why not? Finally, an individual’s MCAT score and GPA serve as useful quantitative measures when comparing applicants, and middle schools have been known to take them very seriously when grading applicants.

Of course, you also know that being a doctor is not just about getting good grades on paper. Physicians are expected to collaborate with patients and members of the entire healthcare team while contributing to the overall body of medical knowledge.

A large partAAMC appdedicated to experiences – particularly research and clinical experience. Whether you’re a freshman just starting a pre-med program or a senior just beginning enrollment, we have some tips on how to get started in your search for these clinical and research opportunities. .

What are clinical experiences and where can I find them?

clinical experience

In clinical experience, you can divide them into two main categories: paid and volunteer. Examples of paid positions include emergency room technician, pharmacy technician, phlebotomist, licensed general practitioner, emergency room technician, emergency room clerk, and medical staff.

The first four jobs all work within the hospital itself and require different permits, but these requirements generally don’t take long and can be completed during school hours. Many universities also have their own EMT/volunteer rescue services for students to get involved.

Clinical volunteer positions typically do not involve direct medical care as volunteers are not trained or paid but are still able to interact with patients. Hospital emergency rooms, assisted living centers, hospitals, medical centers, or other programs (internships, extracurricular programs, medical assignments) sponsored by your university are good places to go.

inquiryshadow a doctorMeeting in person is also a great way to have a guided patient care experience in a specialty that interests you. If this is an opportunity for you, by all means take it!

What should I learn from the clinical experience?

Medical schools

Although being a doctor is difficult to understand from observation, good clinical experience will inform the role of healthcare professionals in patient care and demonstrate their interaction with each other and with the patient.

So when applying to medical school, it’s important to emphasize what you’ve learned about the field in your clinical experience and how it relates to your desire to become a doctor. You are always welcome to bring back anecdotes from your experiencesInterview at medical schoolandsecond useQuestions. In general, you want to let medical schools know that you have healthcare experience and know what you are applying for.

Where should I look for research experience?

Much of the research experience will be available through your university. Many schools have summer programs designed to allow students to work under the guidance of a mentor and learn research techniques. These points are often limited, so a helpful strategy is to reach out to the science professors you’ve taken classes with to see if they need assistance with their research. Even if they don’t have a broad position, they can often put you in touch with colleagues who do.

Medical centers and independent research institutions (e.g.:Institute for Translational Genomics) also offers internships for students in the summer and academic year. Check with your university’s careers center for other opportunities, or see this listAAMC Summer Program.

What should I learn from the research experience?

Most of the research you will come across isLaboratory or basic research— Working with tissues, genetic material and chemicals in the biochemistry laboratory. Some opportunities allow you to do clinical research that is more focused on testing the effects of different treatments on patients.

Regardless, you need to have background information about what you are researching, your general research question, and the details of your project. Ideally, you should be able to come up with some sort of conclusion and write a poster or presentation that can be submitted later.

Admissions committees can and will ask questions about your research experience inInterview at medical school, especially if you are applying to an MD-PhD program or a school where research plays an important role. Linking your research to the overall topic of your application is crucial to making a good impression.
