Can fleas live on clothing or furniture?

How long do fleas live on carpets? Can fleas live on clothes? Where do fleas come from if you don’t have pets?

These are all very valid questions and we are ready to give you the answers. It seems unthinkable that fleas can stick to inanimate objects, but in a way it can happen. These are your most common questions, answered.

Can fleas live on furniture?

Can fleas live on the couch? Yes, yes and no.

Think of it this way: Dogs and cats spend a lot of time on or near furniture. The fleas themselves must live on the host, but flea eggs are always spread by pets on the go.

Wherever your pet vibrates, flea eggs are likely to end up. Sofas, carpets, chairs, beds… these are all places where flea eggs from infected pets can land and turn into larvae.

Their furniture is a primary haven for eggs or larvae before they mature into adult fleas, but the adults do not stay outside the cocoon for more than a moment. They only emerge from the cocoon when they sense the change in heat in the air that the potential host creates.

What are the chances that fleas are on my clothes?

As illustrated in the section above, the chances of adult fleas living on your clothing are extremely low. Without eating the blood of a brand new host, the fleas die very quickly, in just a few days.

However, due to the accumulation of eggs and the length of the pupal stage, you may find eggs or cocoons hidden in your clothing. This really only works for winter coats or items that aren’t washed often, as the water from the washing machine can kill any eggs or larvae. So in the event that a pet in the house shakes flea eggs in a heapfreshly washed clothes, there is a chance that the clothes in the washing machine will see again before turning into an adult flea.

Taking all factors into account, the possibility of fleas in clothing is possible, but only under very unlikely circumstances.

Do fleas like lights and lightbulbs?

As larvae, these creatures are blind and very sensitive to light, so as adults they tend to burrow in dark places with no light source. As they mature into adult fleas, their eyes develop, but they are still very primitive compared to the eyes of other animals.

Fleas can detect changes in light, but rely primarily on their senses to find a host. Because of this very basic vision, fleas are attracted to light and heat. This concept is called phototaxis: Changing from dark to bright light is comfortable for fleas, so they live in places with lots of white, soft blue, or bright green light.

Fleas do not live on onions as there is no way they can feed on onions. However, fleas are more likely to be attracted to hosts that are regularly exposed to sunlight.
