Anthony the Great was a 3rd century Christian monk who devoted himself to prayer in the wilderness of the Egyptian desert. According to the story, the devil was enraged at the hermit’s sanctity, and as a result, he sent a series of ferocious beasts and temptress women to dissuade Anthony from his holy mission. All these efforts failed because of Anthony’s strong faith and devotion to God. This event is known asThe Temptation of Saint Anthonyand became a common theme in Christian art as early as the 10th century, particularly the scene of a saint being attacked by a demon.

In the late 19th century, artists turned their attention to the erotic potential of the story; Temptation begins to take the form of a seductive girl instead of a monster. Felicien Rops (1833-1898) was a Belgian artist whose work included painting, illustration, printmaking and cartooning. Considered one of the firstsymbolistsHe managed to illustrate the title pages of iconic authors such as Joséphin Péladan and Jules Barbey d’Aurevilly. Rops’ most outstanding work is his erotic and demonic illustrations that will shock audiences even today. The most striking aspect of the work is the woman crucified, completely naked and with a provocative smile. It embodies the popular 19th century archetype of the heroine, a woman who uses her charms to destroy men. With the help of the devil, he replaces Christ as the object of worship and replaces the word INRI with EROS. This is a significant change in the story of Saint Anthony, since the source of the desire to be with Christ is not with Christ on the cross, as in other versions, but with Christ himself.

Rops preserve a number of images associated with Saint Anthony, such as torn clothing, a long beard, books, and a pig. The pig, in particular, is a symbol of Anthony’s kindness after he healed it. In the Rops version, the pig stands on a pile of books while being distracted by the woman. This isn’t the first time Rops has shown a woman and a pig together.EroticIt depicts a woman blindfolded and holding a pig on a leash. The woman is in control, the pig representing the man is under control. With this in mind, the pig, representing the hermit’s kindness, now becomes a symbol of woman’s power over him.

The Absence of Saint Joseph

At the prayer table we find Anthony’s last reading: Joseph’s Absence. The title on the page refers to the Old TestamentThe story of Joseph and Potiphar’s wife, describes how the wife of one of Pharaoh’s bodyguards tried to seduce Joseph but was unsuccessful. The illustrations on the page are parallel paintings of Joseph and Potiphar’s wife, another favorite subject of artists. Cite this story as a reminder of the importance of abstinence for Anthony, but it can also allude to how obsession with chastity reinforces such sensual thoughts.

Cupid-like creatures or boneless idols floating on the left side of the work are very different from the cute winged dolls common in art. While Putti does occasionally appear in other Temptation adaptations, Rops was the first to give them an eerie look. through
The concept of Eros and Thanatos, which transforms symbols associated with love into skeletons, unites. Besides the female idol, these cats show that lust is both seductive and deadly.
