Money, security and language differences are key factors to know before traveling abroad.

When you travel to new places, many things can be different than you are used to. This applies to every trip, but especially to international trips.

It’s great to know some basic information to prepare for your trip, especially when it comes to money and safety. Knowing these details about Iceland before you travel will put your mind at ease and make traveling less stressful! Hooray for that!

Don’t rent to buy tubes

What is it: Value Added Tax (VAT) is a recoverable amount on items purchased in Iceland and taken abroad.

What qualifies: Buy clothing, souvenirs and other gifts totaling ISK 6,000 or more. This does not apply to food and drinks during your stay in Iceland.

Here’s what to do: Ask for your tax-free receipt at the checkout when you make your purchase. Submit the receipt to the customs office at Keflavík International Airport.

What you have: Cashback is usually given in ISK cash, which can then be converted into your own currency.

* VAT in Iceland is currently 25.5% or 7% for special goods.

tax exemption

reality: Iceland is one of the few countries in the world that is tax free both to and from Keflavík International Airport.

What do you have to do:Purchase any alcohol you would like for a tip before heading to the airport. This will be a huge money saver. Even the locals stock up on duty-free booze!

FYI: You must be at least 20 years old to buy alcohol and 18 years old to buy cigarettes and tobacco.

Last way out: If you decide not to shop duty free or run out of supplies during your trip, the only place you can buy alcohol in Iceland is at a store called Vínbúðin.

money

currency: The currency in Iceland is the Icelandic Krona (ISK). Many places (restaurants, bars, tourist attractions) accept US Dollars, Canadian Dollars, Euros, Norwegian, Swedish and Danish currencies.

payment: Icelanders usually payeverythingby credit or debit card. Pay by card with chip and PIN method. If you don’t have a chip on your card, you can sign up for a purchase. Most people don’t even bring cash because card payments are so common. I’ve actually never kept cash here to this day!

To change: If you prefer to take cash with you, there is a bank and an ATM at Keflavík Airport where you can change money. Just be aware that you may be charged international fees for ATM withdrawals – check with your bank first.

Top: You don’t have to worry about tipping in Iceland – this applies to restaurants, bars and even taxis! Bonuses are already included in the meal price. Of course, Icelanders know that tipping is an important part of American culture, so they would never turn down an extra extra on the bill!

In Iceland it's most common to use chip-pin number payment.

Languages easy to speak in Iceland: Icelandic and English (especially in the main tourist areas.)

Iceland is known for its high literacy rate and almost all Icelanders are fluent in English. Icelanders generally like to converse in English, so you don’t need to know Icelandic to get around.

tips: I usually start with “Is English okay?” just to help them keep their heads up instead of giving them a stunned look when they start speaking Icelandic.

Why Iceland should keep their króna – and follow the euro

Iceland should abandon the flexible exchange rate of the króna and the present inflation target as well as their own central bank – in favour of a currency board with a truly fixed exchange rate of the króna to the euro. The euro should be used as the reserve currency of Iceland. This is the advice given by two Swedish researchers from Lund University in a new report, commissioned by the Icelandic government.

The report, Lessons for Iceland from the monetary policy of Sweden, will be presented by the researchers Lars Jonung and Fredrik NG Andersson on a conference in Iceland on June 6th.

Watch my video iceland currency and learn about the Iceland’s currency. Also learn how to convert Icelandic króna (ISK) currency to British Pound (GBP) currency. I use xe.com an online currency converter and calculator.

Convert ISK to GBP Currency: Icelandic Krona (ISK), Country: Iceland, Region: Europe, Currency: British Pound Sterling (GBP), Country: United Kingdom.

The króna (plural krónur) (sign: kr; code: ISK) is the currency of Iceland. The króna was historically subdivided into 100 aurar (singular eyrir),[1] but this subdivision is no longer used.

The word króna, meaning “crown”, is related to those of other Nordic currencies (such as the Danish krone, Swedish krona and Norwegian krone) and to the Latin word corona (“crown”).[2] The name “Icelandic crown” is sometimes used, for example in the financial markets. The word eyrir derives from Latin aura, gold, there being historically 100 gold pieces to a crown
