With the World Series underway, it seems appropriate for my reference onlyAbbot and Costello Sketchesto discuss how brands can incorporate a bit of humor into their blog titles and subheadings.

Abbott: Come on, let’s see, we have on the bags, who’s first, what’s second, I don’t know, third…
Costello: That’s what I wanted to find out.
Abbott: I say who is first, what is second, I don’t know, third.
Costello: Are you manager?
Abbott: Yes.
Costello: Will you also be a coach?
Abbott: Yes.
Costello: And you don’t know the guys’ names?
Abbott: I should.
Costello: So who was first?
Abbott: Yes.
Costello: I mean the colleague’s name.
Abbott: Who.
Costello: The first.
Abbott: Who.
Costello: The first warrior.
Abbott: Who.
Costello: The guy who’s playing…
Abbott: Who goes first!

As the skit continues to risewry humor, you see the point. Humor can and always will be one of the things that unites us. Whether you’re a brand trying to connect with customers or a customer trying to build a relationship with a specific brand, the road to understanding can easily be paved with a little humor.

Who is the first headline?

Having trouble finding a humorous voice for your brand? If yes, don’t worry. Not only do you have great resources for “finding your humor,” but you can start with the smallest, but often the most impactful part of a post… the headline. The title gives you a unique opportunity to release a good liner. Regardless of whether you use questions or statements, there are three distinctive characteristics of headings:

  1. Short, crisp and to the point.
  2. A percentage of your readers will only look at the headline. Make sure they’re short but still funny if you want your readers to laugh, bookmark your posts, and end up reading all your carefully crafted words.
  3. Help! I say briefly.
  4. Every time I read, hear or write this sentence, I automatically think of the iconic Austin Powers scene. But when it comes to describing headlines, the phrase takes on a more colloquial connotation, i.e. your headline should succinctly (briefly) summarize the information provided in the following paragraphs.
  5. Remembered in a positive way.
  6. The third important characteristic of titles is that they should be memorable in the blog post. Take the titles in this post for example. They continue the original trend outlined in the title, help you (the reader) keep track of the information provided, and last but not least, make you smile when you make a positive association between negative and negative titles and Abbott and Costello skits produce .

What converts to get the title

Headlines can make or break a blog post. In fact, it’s one of the reasons why so many blog posts, email campaigns, newsletters, and websites undergo A/B split testing. In short, it’s the headline that wins people over first. With that in mind, adding a dash of humor to your headlines is a great way to generate laughs, get more shares on social media platforms, and pave the way for a great relationship with your audience. Last but not least,Who doesn’t love a good laugh?

Well the key to adding humor to your headlines is to think before you write and of course follow these tips.

  1. A fun title in itself.
  2. Think of headlines as the heart of a good joke. Let the blog post be the story behind the joke.
  3. Funny titles usually attract a wider audience.
  4. You can use a two-part header. For example, start with a short question and then answer the question with a bit of humor in the second part of the title.
  5. A play on words clearly has a different power than the subtle hint that the reader only gets by reading the meta description.

I didn’t know I was marking the end

The moral of this story should be simple, in Costello’s words: “Who am I throwing the ball to. Everyone is dropped the ball and that person runs second. Who picks up the ball and throws it to the what? I don’t know what it was. I Don’t Know throws it back in Tomorrow, Triple Play. Another guy got up and hit a long balloon for “Because.” Why? I do not know! He’s third and I don’t love him! ”

In other words, by adding a bit of humor to the headlines and titles of your blog posts, you can liven up the content, elicit a few laughs, and create a real piece of digital marketing.
