Ten years ago today, an ember started a fire left by a camper on Ham Lake in northeast Minnesota, and started a fire that would burn 75,000 acres in the Superior National Forest, Canoes Area Boundary Waters and Quetico Provincial Park in Ontario beyond the Canadian border destroyed. A year later, Stephen Posniak, the man accused of causing the fire, died at his home from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The suicide comes a day after a federal judge denied action that challenged important aspects of the prosecution.

Below is an article about the fire published by the Minnesota Interagency Fire Center. All photos of this Tunnel Lake Fire are from their archives.

Memoir: The 10th Anniversary of the Ho Ham Fire

Ten years ago on May 5, residents of Ham Lake in northeast Minnesota watched as embers from a small campfire erupted into a 75,000-acre hell-busting structure that cost an estimated $10 million and burned more than 25 square miles . In a recentInterview with Minnesota Public RadioResidents call it “Devil’s Flame” because it quickly spirals out of control due to erratic winds and unusually dry conditions. The fire, one of the largest in Minnesota, started along a 60-mile two-lane cul-de-sac surrounded by Wilderness of the Boundary Canoe Area, Superior National Forest and eventually ice over the Canadian border.

“We weren’t expecting this type of fire activity at this time of year. There’s usually snow and ice,” said Tom Lynch, first responder and 30-year-old wilderness firefighter. “When we got the call, most of us were in civilian clothes. We grabbed what we could and got there quickly,” says Lynch, who recalls prioritizing the removal of kayaks and canoes amid building protection decisions.

Ham Lake Fire 2007 Minnesota

Strong, constantly changing winds allow fires to break out quickly and unpredictably. A 30,000-foot plume of smoke was visible from hundreds of cabins, businesses, camps and surrounding residential areas. In the end, about 133 buildings, a costume shop and 61 apartments were destroyed. It could get worse. There were no deaths.

“The Ham Lake Fire was man-made and burned near the Gunflint Trail area of the Superior National Forest,” said Kris Reichenbach, the US Forest Service official in charge. “The fire quickly spread to areas heavily fueled with dead and fallen wood.”

The heavy fuel generated by a severe 90 mph storm in 1999 destroyed nearly 500,000 acres of woodland. Seven years later, the Tunnel Lake Fire, ignited by lightning, consumed more than 31,500 acres west of the 2007 Tunnel Lake area.Senior National Forest Reportpointed out that “once the fire reached the designated major firefighting areas, it was extinguished and ready to be extinguished by direct attack. Treatments were focused on the west side of the badlands-city boundary on the Gunflint Trail, resulting in containment of the fire’s spread to residences. “

Ham Lake Fire 2007 Minnesota

At one point during the week-long incident, more than 1,000 Incident Command System (MNICS) personnel from the United States, Canada and Minnesota joined the force. The Gunflint Volunteer Fire Brigade was instrumental in the first phase of the strike. Nearly two dozen Minnesota fire departments participated when there was a unified command.

In addition to the scale and intensity of the hompit fire, it became a learning experience that supported teaching. More than 100 homeowners along the Gunflint Trail installed sprinkler systems after the 1999 flood due to the increased risk of fire. It is estimated that the sprinklers saved at least 50 structures.

“What stands out is that it’s a transcendent demonstration of proactive planning, preparation and practice,” said Daria Day, a public information officer who was first on the field. Implementing such sprinklers saved a lot of work. It is a very good example of community preparedness and bushfire prevention.”
