SongMy mother saidHe is perhaps most recognized through the popular Vikings show, also known as Þat mæltiín móðir, in its ninth-century Old Norse form. But as an archaeologist, this song ignites something in this author’s never-ending thought experiments about populations that existed in the Iron Age. Vikings may have faced some economic, political and social pressures in Norway during the Viking Age and may have started to expand abroad for various reasons. As the song says: My mother told me that one day I will take oars with good oars, sail to distant shores. It was not only the excitement of the new but also the pressure from the homeland that drove the Vikings to distant shores. This is very important to remember! There are many examples of understanding this hymn, and the example below is a great reminder of the truth for some of the Norse Viking Age.

From conquest to power in Ireland

Pressures from local power, politics, and economy forced some Northerners to emigrate. Viking migrations to Dublin emphasized a desire for power and a certain fame that was largely unattainable in their homeland. If they want power and fame, they must find it elsewhere than in their homeland. Which some did.

My mother said

Someday I’ll buy (I’ll buy)

Galleries with good shovels

sails to distant shores

The Viking raids came as a shock to the Irish people, and they came to stay when the Vikings overwintered in Dublin in 841-842 AD. At least for a while. Dublin is said to be the first registered urban community built in Ireland. Dublin quickly became known as the most powerful Norse Viking kingdom and became a center of international trade and connection. As he quickly gained strength, Viking Dublin sought to dominate all Viking activity in the country. Which did they manage to do?

The Vikings came to Ireland, a land where local dynasties were at war with each other. The Vikings played their cards wisely and occupied an important place in the struggles between Irish dynasties. During the Killer war in AD 868, the king of Tara, Aed Finnliath (862-79), stood against the kings of Brega and Lenister. In this war, about three hundred Vikings took part in this war and Dublin was led by Amlaíb’s son Carlus. In this sense, the outcome of the war is immaterial. But the Vikings’ strategic intervention, such as hiring manpower for the Irish war against them, created a great opportunity for the Vikings. And they are very good in strategic conflicts. And by doing so, they were able to form alliances with said kings or lords, which further contributed to their seizure of power. They have put everything in order to achieve this power. This includes the dynasty’s lands, resources, wealth and power. No multiple activities.

Common enemy

As Dublin became a dominant powerhouse, the opposing Irish society suddenly had a common enemy that had to be eliminated. If that wasn’t enough, the endless power struggle between the Vikings themselves created the dire situation in Dublin. After the deaths of king Ímar (Ivarr) in 873 AD and king Amlaib (Ólafr) in 874, at least three rival families vie for control of Dublin. Amlaib’s son was killed in 875, and this is just one example of dynastic assassinations that took place during this period. The struggle for power continued in the advanced stages 883, 888 and 893, the main conflict between rival clans. Due to the fierce resistance of Irish society and the power struggle among the Viking royal families themselves, Viking control of Dublin was slowly falling apart. The final defeat for the Dublin Vikings came in 902 when the kingdoms of Brega to the north and Lenister to the south joined forces to defeat their common enemy.

“The heretics were driven out of Ireland, that is, from the castle of Dublin. . . and escaped death by injuries and broken bones”- Journalist profile (Corráin, 2001, pp. 21-22).

great naval fleet of the pagans

Noble bar I manage

too many enemies

too many enemies

The sudden arrival of “a great pagan navy” in Waterford Harbor in 914 marked the second wave Viking age in Ireland. Things will not be easy for the Irish clans from now on. Never before had the Vikings acted so violently and aggressively, and the number of chieftains and elites killed at the Battle of Islandbridge in 914 was unprecedented. This clearly stunned the Irish people, as the Vikings once again claimed control of Dublin.

The confusing number of guys named Amlaib makes these facts even more confusing. Keep hold of! During the Second Viking Age in Ireland, Amlaib was the Viking king of Dublin and was undoubtedly the most important figure of Viking society in the British Isles and Ireland. It is described as:”The pagan Anlaf (Amlaib) king of Ireland and many islands…””. Toward the end of his life, Amlaíb was king of Dublin, half of Great Britain and possibly part of Scotland. He died in 941 and was succeeded by his relative Amlaib Cuarán. While in York to regain his power, King Congalach of Tara (r. 944-56) allied himself with the Lenister king and ambushed Dublin with a newfound ferocity:

The destruction brought upon him was this: his houses, curtains, ships and other structures were burned; women, boys and civilians were enslaved; his men and warriors were killed; Except for a small group that escaped with a few ships and reached Dalkey, it was destroyed out of four by being killed and strangled, burned and captured (Corráin, 2001, p. 24).

Amlaib Cuarán’s final defeat in AD 980 marked the end of the power struggle and the Viking powerhouse in Dublin. However, Viking control of Dublin was defeated, successful and recaptured several times by the Irish before a gradual change took place and the Irish Viking Age ended. Despite their expulsion, the Vikings left their mark on Irish society. They now share a common culture. A political, literary and artistic work that left its mark on Irish Viking material from this period.

My mother said

My mother saidIt can give insight into Scandinavian society and point to a time when they had to fight for their place in society, whether in Norway or abroad. The complexity of Scandinavian migrations and settlements in Dublin and the rest of Ireland shows how important this song is to the realities of Scandinavian life and how it affects how they came to be. They have been successful in many ways. And sometimes, not so much. No matter how many times we twist this up: The Vikings were very successful in their quest for power and fame, and it took a long time to be defeated. At least that’s the case in Dublin.

SongMy mother saidIt can also express and reinforce a modern view of the Vikings. It was uniquely incorporated into the famous Viking show and has since become an illuminating element in defining and understanding the Viking Age from a modern perspective beyond its historical and archaeological aspects. Archeology and history have one way of portraying the Viking Age, and the mass media have another. In any case, divineMy mother saidWhile it remains very relevant in understanding the Viking Age from a modern perspective, it’s also a glimpse into the possible past. It depicts a completely different interpretation of the Viking Age as I see it.

Iron Age Scandinavian archaeologist with a bachelor’s degree in Viking Age identity from an ancient Viking Age settlement at Birsay Broch, and a master of identification in the early Viking Ages of the early Viking Ages, migrant societies in Orkney and Dublin rely on burial items from objects buried from said location. Exchange studies at the College of the Highlands and Islands in Kirkwall, Orkney, during your undergraduate degree.

In my master’s thesis, I studied a total of 124 funerals from Orkney and Dublin, where I tried to distinguish different manifestations of identity. This is intended to give a different perspective to immigrant societies and to have some differences in their settlements despite coming from the same homeland. The main expressions of identity are gender, warrior and religious identity.

As a writer for Scandinavian Archeology, I was responsible for writing some of the papers presented, a work I am very passionate about.
