TheGirlsAreAllSoNiceHereCoverThe Wesleyan University student wrote to his family: “All the girls here are so beautiful. And that’s certainly true of some girls who make lifelong friendships and look forward to each other. But it’s definitely not the casenovelThe narrator of ‘Ambrosia “Amb” Wellington whose desperation to escape her small-town roots has led her to team up with Sloane “Sully” Sullivan, a bad girl who, for her own amusement, plays with her lusts, classmates and vulnerabilities plays.

Their friendship plans begin to materialize when Amb meets Kevin, Flora’s longtime boyfriend, Amb’s overly friendly and trusting roommate. Amb decides that she and Kevin are a better match, and Sully helps her plan how to win him over. Later in the novel, Amb reflects:

Because it’s never just about the boy. It’s about the girl standing in the guy’s way. Maybe it had something to do with her all along. [66%]

In fact, Amb’s fight over Kevin has more to do with her true attraction to the boy than her desire to put Flora down for being too perfect. This plan went horribly wrong. Fast-forward to Amb and Sully’s ten-year college reunion, and the invitation to the reunion arrives with a mysterious card in the mail that reads, “You must come. We need to talk about what we did that night.” The novel is told in alternating chapters, from the time Ambros was in college and the time she reunited with her husband Adrian for 10 years, both of them Actions that pound on what Amb and Sully were doing all those years before.

The girls are all so pretty heredark and unhappylost girlA sort of terrifying heroine who is so charismatic that you can’t help but be drawn into her orbit. Instead, the novel feels so somber that Amb’s downward spiral in college, from defiant to ruthless to anything beyond, is hard to accept. Her friendship with Sully is nothing short of toxic, and while we’ve grown to love Amb quite a bit throughout the novel, it’s hard to really sympathize with her.

Given that, it’s hard to expect her to be punished. The author casts enough doubts throughout the novel that we don’t really find out what happened until much later in the book, and even then it’s hard to know if Amb was really as complicit in what happened as he was. Her struggles today with husband Adrian walk an equally fine line where she suffers in life to the point where it’s hard to hate her, but Adrian is nice too and she treats him so badly, so badly that it it was hard to sympathize with her.

I read the book pretty quickly. It’s a suspenseful, funny and puzzling page turner that kept me hooked with all its twists and turns and discoveries from start to finish. Flynn is a good writer and she certainly made a really good horror film.

But the book is dark. We finally have a big reveal and some sort of justice, but at this point all the major players are so toxic and consumed by hate that it’s hard to cheer them up or feel liberated.

Flora, Amb’s roommate, is described as being too cute and too kind, trusting everyone wholeheartedly, and considering Amb his best friend despite all the crap Amb says and does behind her. In a way she is the prettiest of the girls and there are places in the book where the book seems to show us that Amb was wrong in her assessment of Flora. Although kind, Flora is an ordinary girl, not a perfect character, and her kindness is important to her other classmates. It’s something a lot of the other characters seem to believe in, and it’s definitely something I want to stick with.

But in the end, and to me, the book sadly seems to embrace Amb and Sully’s more skeptical view of the world. “She’s going to ask me to help her design the armor she needs,” a character thinks of a little girl at one point in the novel. “I’ll make sure she wears it.” It’s painful to think about a three month old, but that’s where the book seems to sink so deeply into us and the thoughts it leaves when we turn the last page.

It was a good book. Just: take a moment to take care of yourself after reading this.

On this episode, I talk to Laurie Elizabeth Flynn about her thriller The Girls Are All So Nice Here.

The Girls Are All So Nice Here Summary

A lot has changed in years since Ambrosia Wellington graduated from college, and she’s worked hard to create a new life for herself. But then an invitation to her ten-year reunion arrives in the mail, along with an anonymous note that reads, “We need to talk about what we did that night.”

It seems that the secrets of Ambrosia’s past—and the people she thought she’d left there—aren’t as buried as she believed. Amb can’t stop fixating on what she did or who she did it with: larger-than-life Sloane “Sully” Sullivan, Amb’s former best friend, who could make anyone do anything.

At the reunion, Amb and Sully receive increasingly menacing messages, and it becomes clear that they’re being pursued by someone who wants more than just the truth of what happened that first semester. This person wants revenge for what they did and the damage they caused—the extent of which Amb is only now fully understanding. And it was all because of the game they played to get a boy who belonged to someone else and the girl who paid the price.

Alternating between the reunion and Amb’s freshman year, The Girls Are All So Nice Here is a “chilling and twisty thriller” (Book Riot) about the brutal lengths girls can go to get what they think they’re owed, and what happens when the games we play in college become matters of life and death.
