japanese cherry blossoms at ryoanji temple in kyoto

To everyone’s delight, the cherry blossoms were in full bloom across Japan as families and friends united for the long-awaited, long-awaited tradition of hanami (cherry blossom viewing). The explosion of pale pink petals is an intoxicating sight, but did you know that their splendor is more than just eye-catching? The meaning of cherry blossoms in Japan is profound, making the country’s national flower a cultural symbol revered around the world not only for its overwhelming beauty but also for its enduring expression of love, life, death and renewal.

What is cherry blossom?

Cherry blossoms, also called sakura in Japan, are small, soft pink flowers borne by the cherry blossom tree. Spring’s blossoming is a lush but extraordinarily ephemeral sight; after only two weeks they fall to the ground and wither, falling like snow with the ebb and flow of the wind. It is a flower native to Asia that is also found in China, Korea and India, but is now enjoyed in full bloom around the world.

From the United States and Canada to Australia and New Zealand, Sakura attracts and captivates an international audience.

What does cherry blossom mean?

Cherry blossoms are highly valued in China, signifying love and feminine mysteries (beauty, strength and sexuality), but nowhere in the world are the elusive flowers more popular than in Japan, home to thousands of cherry blossom trees. The image of flowers and leaves pervades Japanese paintings, films, and poetry.

Every April, families and friends across the country gather in large groups to celebrate hanami and throw lavish parties with music under the giant trees covered in bright pink feathers.

But what exactly are they celebrating and celebrating?

The brightness, fragility and transience of life

Associated with the Buddhist themes of death, mindfulness and living in the present, the Japanese cherry blossom is a timeless metaphor for human existence. The flowering period is powerful, glorious and intoxicating, but tragically brief – a visual reminder that our lives are fleeting too.

Why don’t we marvel at our own time on earth with the same joy and passion? Why should we forget to indulge in life when it could end at any moment, or the grace that surrounds us everywhere: family, friends, a stranger’s smile, the voice of a child’s laughter, the new taste on our plate or the smell of green grass? It’s time cherry blossoms remind us to be careful.

In Japanese culture, sakura is the embodiment of beauty and death, which can be traced back many centuries. No one in history embodies this metaphor more than the samurai, warriors of feudal Japan who lived by bushido (“the warrior’s way”) – a strict moral code of respect, honor, and discipline. Her mission is not only to model and uphold these virtues in life, but also to appreciate the inevitability of death without fearing it – in battle it comes too soon for her. A falling cherry blossom or petal is believed to symbolize the end of their short lives.

During World War II, the cherry blossom also held a similar meaning as Japanese pilots, who painted their kamikaze fighters with the image of the flower before going on missions, committed suicide to “die like beautifully falling cherry blossom petals for the Emperor.”

Sakura is no longer acceptable for military use or self-destruct; Today they are highly regarded for philosophical and aesthetic reasons.

Sakura is also revered as a symbol of rebirth. In fact, hanami has been established as a ritual since 710, long before Japan’s rise to feudalism. The cherry blossom tree is said to represent the mountain deities who transformed into the rice god in Japanese folk religion and represents the reproduction of agriculture. During this time, the Japanese would travel to the mountains every spring to worship the trees and then transplant them to residential areas.

Therefore, sakura always heralds the beginning of spring, a time of renewal and optimism. Since the heyday coincides with the start of the Japanese calendar year, they also bring new hopes and dreams as students begin their first day of school and workers their first day of work. When the cherry blossoms are in full bloom, the future is filled with opportunity.

Hanami rite

In addition to being a springtime activity in Japan, hanami is also a national pastime with deep cultural and religious roots.

When the Japanese gather under the cherry blossom trees every April, they don’t just admire a flower’s aesthetic qualities. At tables filled with sake glasses, bento boxes and sweet mochi cakes, they greet a new day. They express the beauty of life. They remember the loss of loved ones and reflect on their own precious lives with a sense of wonder as they erase the past to usher in a bright, promising new year.

Finally, the meaning of cherry blossoms teaches the Japanese that they are cherry blossoms. We are all.
