Multi-read content why are there interstate highways in hawaii
This question is a classic story, a list of mostly jokes and, most recently, the thought-provoking story of a national Volkswagen TV spot. Unfortunately, the answer isn’t nearly as funny as the question.
There are three main highways in Hawaii, creatively named H-1, H-2, and H-3, and a lesser-known fourth, H-201. They are called “interstates” because they are both part of a national network of interstate highways – technically the Interstate and Defense Highway System The Dwight D. Eisenhower – and were built to the same budget and generally to the same specifications.
The H-1 is 27.1 miles long and runs from Makakilo on the Farrington Freeway (Hawaii State Route 93) to Kahala on the Kalanianaole Expressway (Hawaii State Route 72).
The H-2 is 8.3 miles long and runs from Pearl City to Wahiawa on Wilkina Drive (Hawaii State Route 99) – near Schofield Barracks and Wheeler Army Airfield.
The H-3 is 15.3 miles long and runs from Pearl Harbor to the main gate of Marine Corps Base Hawaii at Kaneohe.
H-201 is 4.1 miles long and runs from H-1 near Aiea to H-1 in Honolulu. Often referred to as Hawaii’s “Secret Highway,” much information can be found along this detour

As you can see from the official name of this highway network, the predominance of military installations at the ends is no coincidence. While these roads are mostly used by civilians, the idea is to have a unified and efficient network of highways to connect military bases… just in case. For example, the hills and valleys along most interstate highways must not be too steep, curves are not considered too sharp, and entrances and shortcuts are usually located above or below highways (allowing for easier travel inspection) and soon.
It should be noted that the H-3 is the most expensive highway ever built, costing more than $1.5 billion ($100 million per mile). It had many detractors, and few pointed out how little it was used by the islanders. Of course, it wasn’t built for them: as mentioned above, it was built to connect the Marine Corps base to the US Navy port at Pearl Harbor.
There’s a lot of trivia about the interstate highway system, and it’s not surprising that Hawaii’s entries are quirks. Interstate H-201, the “secret interstate,” broke all the rules. Further examples? In the National Highway System, even numbers (I-4 in Florida) represent the major east–west freeways and odd numbers (I-97 in Maryland) represent the major freeways. All of Hawaii’s highways follow this “rule”. Other exceptions are the fact that the H-1 has many ramps and ramps that are level (not raised or lowered), some ramps impede the flow of traffic, and some ramps are closer than a mile apart, all of which gives the feel that You here are the uneasiness of everyday community.
