On November 19, 1863, President Abraham Lincoln delivered a speech that would be quoted for centuries to come. But what do you really know about the Gettysburg address? Check out some things you might not know about the iconic speech.

  • Lincoln’s address begins with “Four points and seven years ago.” A number of dots equals 20 years, so it was referring to 87 years ago – 1776 when the Declaration of Independence was signed. So the speech was given seven points and seven years ago.
  • On the day of the speech, Lincoln’s tribute was hardly the highlight of the event. Instead, the biggest speech went to Edward Everett, who spoke for two hours before Lincoln took the podium.
  • Everett later wrote to Lincoln about his speech, saying, “I wish I could flatter myself that I got as close to the central idea of the event in two hours as you do in two minutes.”
  • The actual text of the speech is obtained from part five of the five manuscripts, all written in Lincoln’s handwriting. Each copy is slightly different, possibly due to Lincoln’s self-editing.
  • The Library of Congress has two copies, the Illinois State Historical Library has one, Cornell University has one, and one is in the Lincoln Room of the White House.

The full text of the Gettysburg address is below. (aboutBritannica,Library of Congress)

Four points and seven years ago our ancestors fathered a new nation on this continent, conceived in freedom and dedicated to the assertion that all men are created equal.

We are now engaged in a great civil war, testing whether this nation, or any nation so conceived and dedicated, can stand. We meet on the great battlefield of this war. We have come to dedicate part of this field as the final resting place for those who gave their lives here for the nation to live. We should do so as entirely appropriate and right.

But more broadly, we cannot consecrate this earth – we cannot give it – we cannot consecrate it. The brave, living and dead, who have fought here have given it far beyond our feeble power to add to or detract from. The world will remember little or no what we say here, but will never forget what they did here. Rather, for us who live here, we have made great strides in addressing the unfinished business that they have here been fighting for. Rather than dedicating ourselves here to the great task that remains before us – from these honorable dead we devote more devotion to the cause for which they were the last means of devotion – we are here determined that these dead will do it not perish in vain – that this nation will have a new birth of liberty under God – and the government of the people, by the people, for the people, will not disappear from the face of the earth.
