Wild West Weapons

Welcome to the wild, wild west. We thought we’d introduce you to seven beautiful guns from our collection that you might see in the hands of your favorite cowboys and cowgirls.

Winchester rifle 1873

Winchester rifle
Based on the Henry bolt-action rifle of 1860, the famous Winchester features a massive tubular magazine for timing and rapid-fire levers. Its mechanics later inspired the Maxim machine gun. The 1873 model is the best known and even starred in the film of the original: Winchester ’73 (1950).

LeMat revolver

Le Mat revolver
The LeMat was unusual in that its cylinder held nine shots instead of the usual five or six, and an additional shotgun barrel was mounted underneath. That was a lot of firepower when the revolver was introduced in 1856, and it continued to be supported by Confederate countries throughout the American Civil War. LeMat had a standout appearance in the 2010 martial arts/western mash-up The Warrior’s Way.

Whitworth rifles

Whitworth rifle
The British Whitworth rifle is similar to the more famous Enfield Pattern 1853, but features a pistol and is designed to fire hexagonal, tight-fitting cartridges. This resulted in less wasted propellant when firing, which made it valued for its accuracy during the American Civil War among Confederate sharpshooters. A lesser-known weapon of the time, it recently appeared as a storyline in BBC One’s Victorian police drama Ripper Street.

Derringer pistol

Derringer pistol
Named after gunsmith Henry Deringer, “derringer” became the common name for a small, concealable, close-range self-defense weapon carried in the pocket of a vest or hijab. Remington’s version has two buckets raised for loading and is described as being reconstructed in “Django Unchained” (2012).

Colt Single Action Army Revolver

Colt single action army revolver
Perhaps the most famous weapon of the Old West, the Colt 6 shotgun came to be known as the “Western Victory Gun”. Popular with the military, law enforcement officers and criminals, a former train robber said “Colts 45 makes all men equal.” Royal Armories was fortunate to loan a Colt that belonged to rancher John Tunstall, who killed Billy the Kid in revenge in 1878.

Colt Navy revolver

Percussion Six-Shot Revolver – Navy Model Colt 1861 (PR.3537)

The Navy revolver is based on an original design by Colt Paterson from 1836 and is widely used in the military and civilian fields. It does take some time to reload when using the percussion ignition system, but this is one of the first pistols to give the user multiple shots before reloading. This is one of the pistols used by Jamie Foxx in Django Unchained (2012).

Sharp guns

Sharps rifle

Unlike the Winchester, which fires short-range pistol ammunition, the Sharps is a full-barreled, chambered, single-shot rifle using the powerful .50-70 or .45-70 government ammunition. This makes it very accurate and powerful, whether for hunting large animals or “sniping” human targets, as in “Django Unchained” (2012).
