Above: One of Nicholas Roerich’s original designs for The Rite of Spring.

After the failed revolution of 1905, a doomsday cloud seemed to hang over the Russian Empire. With freedom of expression severely curtailed, many artists have increasingly turned to subjective, mysterious sources of inspiration. Some, like the composer Alexander Scriabin, are fascinated by theosophical mysticism; Others look back to the prehistoric past and feel that modern civilization has somehow failed and lost touch with nature.

For example, the poet Alexander Blok wrote of primitive man and nature: “He lived in close communion with it and felt the soul of this creature, with its attendant mysterious journeys, its customs and its vivid colors, which came closest to his own. For Blok and others, the artist’s mission is to revitalize a rich culture by connecting it to its primitive past.

The beginning of a revolution

Amidst this startling zeitgeist, Stravinsky was filled with inspiration: “One day, as I was reading the last pages ofL’Oiseau de feu[The Phoenix] in St. Petersburg I had a glimpse […] In my imagination I saw a solemn pagan ritual: wise elders sat in a circle and watched a young girl dancing to death. They sacrificed them to support the god of spring. “

Nicholas Roerich, photographed in 1916.

With newfound popularity following the massive success ofThe Phoenixduring the 1910 season ofballetIn Paris, Stravinsky sought out the artist and archaeologist Nicholas Roerich, who was the most important expert on prehistoric Russia at the time. Together they created a screenplay for a ballet like no other; Instead of a plot, the ballet would be based on ancient Slavic rituals (except for the dance to death – a passage of romantic ballet that can be traced back toGiselle). Although modern scholars have since questioned some of Roerich’s conclusions about the prehistoric Slavs, the archaeological purpose of the ballet is genuine and almost everything in the ballet is true, supported by contemporary research.

After temporarily setting the project aside for composingPetrushkaand several others, Stravinsky composed the first half of the ballet in 1911 and the second half in 1912 (the gap was a result of the premiere being moved from the 1912 season to the 1913 season).

There are very few instances in history where a single work of art has transcended its influence and actually laid a new foundation. Stravinsky’s score forThe Ritual of Springis one of those cases. Fascinated by images of the primeval past, Stravinsky wrote half an hour of music that broke almost all established rules of good composition, and yet the piece captivated from the first note to the last. Since then, many scholars have attempted to theories explain this music, and while they have uncovered many interesting patterns, the piece’s elemental power remains a mystery. Stravinsky, who often composed with amazing speed, later recalled: “I was guided by no system… I only had ears to help me.”

A new sound for a new era

The track unleashed shocking dissonance and strange new sounds from a huge orchestra. But perhaps even more amazing is its rhythmic complexity; On many pages the meter (basic beat pattern) is in a constant state. The structure of the music is also original; Instead of seamless transitions and organic progression, Stravinsky’s music often changes blocks of music to create extreme contrasts. For all its attacks on convention, however, the score is based on a set of fairly singable melodies, some of which have been shown to be rooted in authentic folk song melodies tied to ancient Slavic festivals. Although many people are most struck by its violent scenes, the song also contains many moments of tender beauty.

From left to right, the composers Debussy and Stravinsky in 1910.

Likewise, through many who recall the horrors of human sacrifice in ballet, music also expresses primal joy and connection with nature. In fact, joy and terror seemed to merge into a single emotion; After performing the first half of the ballet with Stravinsky at the piano, the French composer Claude Debussy wrote: “It haunted me like a good nightmare and I tried in vain to recreate the impression”.

With the finished soundtrack, sets and costumes designed by Roerich and choreography by Vaslav Nijinsky, balletStar dancer (and lover of the ballerina Sergei Diaghilev). Nijinsky seems to have attempted to combine Stravinsky’s revolutionary music with choreography that deliberately went against the traditions of classical ballet. Although the exact choreography has been lost, it was reconstructed by Joffrey Ballet in 1987 based on surviving documents, assessments and memories of the dancers in the original production. The scenery and costumes are also very close to the original. You can watch it here:

The infamous premiere took place on May 29, 1913 at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris. Within minutes, an uproar broke out as the work’s critics began booing and shouting, while its supporters responded kindly. Stravinsky was in despair; Looks like he was really looking forward to itceremonywill be another popular successThe PhoenixandPetrushka. The riot may have been fueled in part by Diaghilev, who took the liberty of handing out free tickets to young, bohemian, artistic people and strategically placing them near ladies and gentlemen of high societyLes Sylphides, a traditional ballet with music by Chopin, shared the program. After it was all over, Diaghilev reportedly said, “Exactly what I wanted.”

Indeed a legend was born; Ironically, this ancient history-inspired ballet has quickly become a symbol of modernity at its most sophisticated. Klaus Obermaier’s choreography, for example, uses 3D animations from the Ars Electronica Futurelab to reinterpret music as an exploration of man’s relationship with technology:

Despite its scandalous debut and enduring controversy, the ballet’s subsequent performances were generally well received, and the music alone quickly became a fixture of the concert, a test of any orchestra’s skill.ceremonywould become one of the most imitated places of the twentieth century; It’s rare that an action movie scene doesn’t use their wild musical language. But only a few composers achieved the power of the original, which fascinates and inspires to this day.– Calvin Dotsey
