In 1823, President James Monroe articulated the landmark policy of what would later become known as the Monroe Doctrine, stating that European powers should not interfere or continue to colonize countries in the Americas. In response, he said that the US would not interfere in European affairs.

Eighty-one years later, President Theodore Roosevelt, best known for modelingforeign policyabout the proverb “Speak calmly and carry a big stick”—He gave a speech to Congress in which he outlined what was being called.Roosevelt Results. In it, he linked his foreign policy approach to the Monroe Doctrine, which states that the United States can be compelled to use “international police force” to intervene when nations in the Americas step in. forces.

Roosevelt was referring to events such as the Venezuelan Crisis, when Venezuela was blockaded by Britain, Germany, and Italy in an attempt to force debts into default. Roosevelt’s stated goal was to keep European influence out of the region – by force if necessary – by maintaining stability in the Americas. But this policy was soon (and often) used to justify US involvement in various Latin American affairs and to defend its dominant position in the region. (Ironically, that’s exactly what the Monroe Doctrine was meant to prevent European nations from doing.)
